Calling all adults, teens and children. The has a wide variety of interesting and entertaining programs lined up to help you fill your summer days.
Summer is one of the busiest times around the library, and everyone is invited to join our summer reading programs. Read for fun all summer and enter our grand prize drawing for some amazing prizes. Summer is a great time to read for pleasure or pick up that book you have been meaning to read, and the library’s programs and events are there to help you enjoy the upcoming warm,
This year’s children’s program titled “Dream Big…Read," will run from June 15 until Aug. 3. Children can register anytime during the summer. Registration involves filling out a reading record and setting a reading goal. The reading goal can be a certain number of books read over the summer or an amount of time spent reading each week.
Children who cannot read yet may participate with a parent or caregiver by signing up for the “Read To Me” program. Reading records will be kept at the library so children can keep track of their progress. Each week a small prize is given to every child who comes into the library to record the books they have read. Children who meet their reading goal by Aug. 12 will receive a book
bag full of surprises and enter the grand prize drawing, which will be held on Aug. 13.
The program will officially start on at 11 a.m. June 15, with a kick-off party. Join us at the library when the Acting Up Theater Company presents Dream, Big Bear....Read!, a story about Bernie the Bear who fears everything, especially the darkness and how choosing the right book to read before bed helps him overcome his fears.
The 45-minute play will be followed by refreshments and Chamberlin's Live Petting Zoo at the Dexter Farmers' Market. There will be a variety of farm animals for children to meet and pet, including a miniature horse, miniature fallow deer, pot bellied pig, alpaca, llama, goats, sheep, rabbits, chickens, roosters and ducks.
Hand sanitizer will be provided, as the library will also serve refreshments.
The teen summer reading program kick-off will also be on June 15 at 11 a.m. Sign-up for the library's “Own the Night” teen program and enjoy some free refreshments at the Farmers' Market while you’re here. Each week, read three hours or more to receive a weekly prize drawing entry ticket. Participate all seven weeks to qualify for the grand prize drawing and receive a free goody bag. Attend any teen program for additional weekly prize drawing tickets.
Why let the kids have all the fun? Adults can sign up for the adult summer reading program, “Between the Covers," on June 15. Anyone 18 and over can register at the second floor Adult Reference desk.
For seven weeks this summer, the library will feature a different nighttime theme. Each participant will receive a Bingo sheet for each week of the program. Participants may finish a Bingo sheet for each of the different weekly themes or can complete multiple Bingo sheets for the same theme.
Completed Bingo sheets can be turned in weekly or all together at the end of the program, but all sheets must be turned in by the final day of the program, Aug. 12. This program is open to all adults ages 18 and up, but families are welcome at all of the special programs and movies that are featured as part of the adult summer reading program line up.

Join us for drop-in story times June 18 through Aug. 2. Throughout the summer, the library will hold story times on Mondays and Thursdays at 11 a.m. Story time is geared for children ages 5 and younger, but all ages are welcome. No registration is necessary for summer story times, which will be held in the lower level meeting room.
In addition to the Summer Reading Program and drop-in story times, the Dexter District Library will offer many programs, performers, events and activities throughout the summer for children, teens and adults of all ages.
Special performances, movies, crafts, educational presentations, games and contests will be presented throughout the summer. All programs are free and open to everyone. A list of all of our events can be picked up at the library or by visiting our website at www.dexter.lib.mi.us.
