From classic cars to Elvis impersonators, Dexter Patch has compiled a list of family-friendly activities to enjoy around the area this weekend.
Kids
- Amazing Merlin the Wizard at the Dexter District Library
Celebrate Friday the 13th with enchantment and mystery when Merlin astonishes the audience with his incredible feats of magic. There’s plenty of audience participation, hilarious comedy, live animals and non-stop fun for all ages. The event takes place at 11 a.m. at the .
- Teen Catapult Challenge
Make a mini catapult and compete against other builders during the launch contest at the Dexter District Library on Friday. The event is open to children in grades 5-12. Registration required. Call 734-426-4477.

- Clay Animation Workshop For Teens
Join Animation Professor Brad Pattullo at the Ann Arbor District Library, 3090 E. Eisenhower Parkway, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday as he guides participants through the process of fabricating a clay puppet for animation. From character design to the assembly of a posable aluminum wire armature and sculpting with plasticine clay, you will come away with a fully-realized, stop-motion puppet for animation or display. The event is free and open to the public.
- Summer Photo Safari
Starting in the Critter House, join naturalist Stefan Szumko on a guided hike at the Leslie Science and Nature Center, 1831 Traver Road, through the Black Pond Woods, the nature center's grounds, prairie, and Project Grow gardens to find wildflowers, fungus, and animals to capture digitally or by using ancient film technology. Bring your own cameras. The event takes place Saturday from 1-3 p.m. Tickets are $6 per person or $25 per family in advance. Tickets the day of the event are $8 per person or $30 per family. - Tours of Rentschler Farm and Saline Railroad Depot Museums
On Saturday and Sunday the Rentschler Farm and Saline Railroad Depot Museums, 1265 E. Michigan Ave., are open 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The farm animals have returned, young lambs and their ewes, as well as baby pigs, Trixie and Dixie. At the depot museum, visit the fully furnished caboose. - Dexter Community Players Present Annie
The will perform the classic musical Annie on July 13 and 14 at 7 p.m., and July 15 at 2 p.m. All performances are at the Dexter Performing Arts Center inside . Tickets can be purchased online at http://dextercommunityplayers.com/.
- ElvisFest
Feel free to dust off your blue suede shoes and head to Ypsilanti this weekend as the Michigan Elvisfest returns to Riverside Park Friday night and Saturday with its 12th annual festival. Tickets are $12.50-$30 and can be purchased online at www.mielvisfest.org or by calling 734-483-4444.
- Jackson Road Cruise
The 4th annual will take place on Saturday in Scio Township. Check out hundreds of classic cars, enjoy games, food and live music all day long. For a schedule of events, visit www.jrcruise.org.
- Saline Celtic Festival
Mill Pond Park in Saline will be turned into a celebration of Celtic music, dance, customs and Celtic culture throughout the weekend. Musical acts include Eileen Ivers & Immigrant Soul, The Tartan Terrors, Rant Maggie Rant, Seven Nations, Moxie Strings, and others. The event takes place Saturday, 10 a.m.-11 p.m. (Music performances begin at 12:30 p.m.) Tickets in advance, Saturday: Adult, $10; youth (13-17), $5; group (10) $80. Saturday, at the gate: Adult, $15; youth, $5; seniors $12. Children under 12 and active military are free. Saturday evening after 8 p.m., $10. Friday night Pub in the Park, $5. - Dexter Wellness Walk
Meet up with friends at the on Saturday at 9 a.m. There are two different routes to choose from depending on how far you want to walk. Bring friends and family. Pets are welcome to attend.
- Ann Arbor ReSkilling Festival
Learn skills for resilient, low-energy living--from fire starting to meditation to perspective drawing to starting a garden. The concept of reskilling is about preparing for our low-energy fuure by acquiring new skills related to what we eat, wear, use and live in. The event takes place Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Rudolf Steiner of Ann Arbor, 2230 Pontiac Trail. The event is free to the public.
