The Dexter District Library is hosting a recruitment session for Wastenaw Literacy June 17 at 7 p.m. at the lower level meeting room in the library.

If you're interested in teaching someone how to read and becoming a reading tutor, now's your chance to get involved. The ABC's of Washtenaw Literacy will give you all the information you need to start volunteering with the program.

According to a release from the library, the one-hour informational session will discuss the time commitment required, how students and tutors are matched and the training involved.

"Interested individuals do not need to be certified teachers or have a previous background in education," the release states. "Washtenaw Literacy provides training and support materials for individuals interested in helping others learn how to read. Even today, one in 8 Washtenaw County residents are barely literate and 50% of children born to illiterate parents grow up to be illiterate adults."

There are tutoring opportunities available to help both English speakers learn to read and write, as well as opportunities to help foreign language speakers learn the skills necessary to function in English.

For more information, you can call the library at 734-426-4477.
