Businesses Lend Aid to Dexter Residents After Tornado

Dexter residents affected by Thursday’s tornado are getting a helping hand from the local business community.

, which has a location just outside a subdivision on Wilson Street that sustained heavy damage from the tornado, was providing free hot dogs, snacks and refreshments Friday to anyone who stopped by the store.

Additionally, the location is storing refrigerated items in its facilities for those who lost power.

Marla Booth, the chain’s vice president of marketing, said the store’s 15 locations also are lending support, allowing shoppers to “round up” their purchase to the nearest dollar to benefit those affected by the storm. About $2,100 had been raised by Friday afternoon, Booth said.

LaFontaine Chevrolet set up a Dexter Tornado Relief Fund that had already raised about $1,400 by Friday evening, according to its website.

The American Red Cross is recommending donations to the United Way. Washtenaw County residents can donate by calling 2-1-1.

The Chelsea State Bank has also created a Dexter Relief Fund, which you can now donate to online via PayPal.

Residents also saw assistance from insurance companies, who set up tents in the subdivision to provide refreshments and meals for local victims while homeowners assessed their homes’ damage and cleaned up debris from the tornado.
