Dexter's Pub Owner Named Dexter Daze Parade Marshal

Peter Theocharakis will lead the Dexter Daze parade down Main Street at 10 a.m. Saturday.

In a fitting tribute to one of Dexter’s well-known humanitarians, the Dexter Daze committee has selected Peter Theocharakis as this year’s parade marshal.

“I didn’t think I was that nice of a guy, but I guess I am,” he said. “The best part is the townspeople notice what I do, and you can’t buy that.”

For 13 years, Theocharakis has offered the pub as a fundraising venue for local residents, businesses and nonprofit organizations.

“We like to support the community as much as we can,” he said. “If someone comes asking for help, I can’t say no. We host events where 10 percent from the entire day’s sales go to help someone else.

“This type of fundraiser is more effective than cutting a check for $100,” he said. “Why give someone $100 when I can help raise $1,000?”

The pub has hosted events for the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life, tsunami relief efforts in Japan, , the Tyler Steffey baseball field at Peace Lutheran Church and Dexter Community Schools, among others.

And his kindness doesn’t stop with money.

In 2010, Theocharakis agreed to pose for the for the Dexter Relay for Life. The calendar featured prominent members of the community decked out in women's bras near their places of business.

“I would absolutely do it again,” he said about posing for future calendars. “People got a kick out of it, and it’s a great conversation starter.”

Theocharakis said he ended up purchasing the bra he modeled for the calendar, and it currently sits in his office.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do with it,” he said.

Theocharakis attributes his kindness to his cultural heritage.

“I’m Greek, and most of us are very friendly,” he joked. “Years ago, my mom passed away from diabetes, and I told her that I would do anything to help find a cure for sickness, I don’t care what it is.”

As far as he’s concerned, Theocharakis plans to remain in the community for many years helping those who come through his doors.

“I love this town,” he said. “It’s a very safe, friendly community, and I love being around to see people come in here and leave happy.”

The Dexter Daze parade will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at and travel down Main Street to the . Those who are in the parade need to report at 9:45 a.m.
