Resolutions!

Oh! The New Year’s Resolutions! Made with such fervor and hope and good intentions. I think we all make them, even when we don’t do it consciously. Many of us know they won’t be kept, at least not for long. So we don’t make them so we won’t disappoint ourselves. But deep in our hearts we can’t help thinking about something we want to change; to do a little differently. And the New Year gives us the opportunity to do that.

There is a story (many actually) of a teacher who went to study at the yoga Institute in Pune, India to learn from Mr. B.K.S. Iyengar. She was practicing one day and he came over and gave her some instructions that proved intense and difficult to do. She worked hard on them, to the point of perspiring and felt she had done well by the end of the practice session, not mastered them, but done well. The next day she was working again on the same points when Mr. Iyengar strode up and questioned to her sternly about why she was practicing that way. She was befuddled since he had been so clear the day before about what to do, but then he explained that that was yesterday’s practice. Today was a new day and she should proceed with new points; a new practice.

Yoga is like that. Every day you have a new chance; you integrate what you have learned and then move on. It’s like getting to achieve your resolutions every day and start afresh again the next day. You try your best, put in your all and somedays you do better, some days you feel like you retreat, but each day you begin afresh with new things to learn, new ways to change, and new insights about yourself.
