Dexter Chamber of Commerce Honors Dapco Industries as 2012 Business of the Year

Dexter Schools Superintendent Mary Marshall received the Spark Plug Award, and Red Brick Kitchen and Bar received the Rookie of the Year Award on Tuesday.

In a night of celebration and showcasing, the Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce (DACC) recognized several local businesses and residents for their commitment to the community during its annual awards banquet at Aubree's Pizzeria on Tuesday. The event was held as a make up for the chamber's original awards banquet, which was interrupted by the Dexter tornado on March 15. "Tonight is really about honoring those members of the community who have gone above and beyond what it means to be part of our little village," Paula Palmer Burns, DACC president said. "A lot of people are digging in to turn our economy around and not waiting for it to turn around." Reflecting on the past two months, as residents in Dexter Village and Dexter Township have …

UPDATED: Dexter Lions Raise Money for Visually Impaired

Members of the Dexter Lions Club will hit the streets this weekend for the annual White Cane fundraiser.

Editor's note: This story has been corrected to reflect that Terry Walters is not the president of the Dexter Lions Club, as previously stated. While many people will undoubtedly hit the road this Memorial Day weekend to mark the unofficial start of summer, the Dexter Lions Club is hoping that its annual White Cane fundraiser will also receive a boost with foot traffic. The White Cane Days fundraising drive is this Friday and Saturday, May 25 and 26. The event is part of a worldwide campaign to fight blindness. The campaign started in 1925 when the Lions Clubs International took up a challenge by blind advocate Helen Keller. She called for the Lions to become “knights of the blind against darkness” by caring for the visually impaired. …

Dexter High School Misses Mark in Newsweek, U.S. News 'Best Schools' Rankings

Dexter was left off of the nation's top 1,000 high schools list, while Chelsea and Saline saw gains in the annual study.

The results of a 2012 study by U.S. News and World Report naming the best high schools across the country are in, and Dexter High School (DHS) did not make the cut. The yearly rankings are based on student proficiency scores for standardized tests, the performance of economically disadvantaged students in a school district compared to average students' performance, and college-readiness performance, which was measured using Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate test data as the benchmarks for success. Researchers analyzed 21,776 public high schools in 49 states and the District of Columbia. The report shows 83 percent of DHS students are proficient in reading, while 75 percent are proficient in math. The school was given an …

This is an excellent article. I agree that there are many good things about the Dexter high school. We have been particularly pleased with the sports programs and coaches. But at the end of the day, school is about education and that has to be the the top priority.   more ›

Dan Rather Gives Message to Journalists: 'Don't be Afraid to Ask the Hard Questions'

The former CBS News anchorman spoke at the Michigan Theatre in Ann Arbor on Monday to promote his new book.

It's said you are not supposed to meet your heroes. But in the case of Dan Rather, I decided to chance it. After all, how often do you have the opportunity to shake hands with one of American journalism's iconic reporters? Monday night I did just that, as Rather, the former anchor and managing editor for CBS News for more than 20 years, gave a talk at the Michigan Theatre in Ann Arbor to promote his new book, "Rather Outspoken." It was no surprise that Rather spent the better half of his hour and a half presentation retelling stories about his career highlights at CBS, much of which are detailed in the book. From the battlefields of the Vietnam War to aggressively pursuing the Nixon administration during the Watergate scandal in the 1970s…

Applications for Dexter Memorial Day Parade Participants Due May 24

Groups participating in the Dexter Memorial Day parade must apply with village officials by Thursday afternoon.

Plans for the Village of Dexter's 68th annual Memorial Day celebration are underway, and officials are seeking community groups to participate in this year's parade. "We're excited to see the members of the American Legion and the general community come together to celebrate the sacrifices of our men and women in the military," village trustee Donna Fisher said in a previous story. Unlike previous years, where virtually any community group could participate, this year the village is limiting the scope of the parade in order to focus the day's events on military veterans. "One of the biggest complaints we received from veterans over the years is that Memorial Day was becoming too much like another Dexter Daze festival," Fisher said. "We …
