Three additional passengers were injured in the accident on I-94 in Washtenaw County on Tuesday night.
A 17-year-old from Jackson was killed following a rollover crash on I-94 near Chelsea on Tuesday. According to Ann Arbor.com, the accident occurred around 9:30 p.m. after the vehicle's driver steered the car onto the shoulder of the freeway while trying to pass other vehicles. The Jackson teen and the driver, a 23-year-old woman from Ypsilanti, were ejected from the vehicle, the news reported. A 28-year-old Ypsilanti man and an infant, who were passengers in the vehicle also were injured in the crash. According to the Michigan State Police, the teen and adults were not wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. Deputies with the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office are investigating a burglary of the Dexter Pharmacy that took place Monday morning. According to police reports, deputies were dispatched to the pharmacy after responding to a burglary alarm. Upon arrival, deputies discovered that a break-in had just occurred. Numerous bottles of medication were taken. The suspect is described as a white male, early 20s, thin build, wearing a black hoodie, with a blue bandana and blue jeans. The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office is warning residents of a new scam asking family members to wire money overseas.
Washtenaw County Sheriff Jerry Clayton has a warning for seniors. Clayton said be wary if someone identifying themself as a grandchild calls saying they are in trouble and need of money for medical bills. On May 3, deputies responded to a call regarding a recent fraud. The victim, a 75-year-old Dexter resident, reported that she had just been "scammed." According to a press release from the sheriff's office, on May 2, the woman received a call from a male subject that addressed her as "grandma." The woman believed the caller was her grandson and continued to have a conversation with him. The caller claimed that he was in an accident in Spain and needed money to pay for hospital bills. Deputies are questioning an individual in connection with complaints of unlicensed target practice in the Walkabout Creek apartment complex.
The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Department said unauthorized target practice was to blame for a district-wide lockdown that occurred at Dexter Community Schools on Tuesday afternoon. According to a report released by the sheriff, deputies were dispatched to Dan Hoey Road around 2:30 p.m. after receiving a call that shots were fired in the area of the Walkabout Creek apartment complex. Due to the proximity of the apartments to Wylie and Bates elementary schools, district officials issued a lockdown of all six buildings until deputies could investigate. No injuries were reported from a fire that broke out west of Ann Arbor on Wednesday morning.
Firefighters from Chelsea, Dexter, Scio Township and Manchester responded to an early morning fire on Wednesday that destroyed a family barn. According to Ann Arbor.com, the barn was located at Scio Church Road near Parker Road and was filled with livestock. Firefighters have not determined how many livestock were in the barn when the fire broke out. There are six buildings located on the property and at least two of them were damaged, Chief James Payeur of the Chelsea Area Fire Authority told the News. A family of five lived in the home, which was scorched in the back, close to the barn. Firefighters said at least one propane tank located in the back of the barn exploded during the fire. According to police reports, the incident occurred in the 8500 block of Second Street on April 7. No suspect information was available. The case remains under investigation by area deputies. More than 100 homes were significantly damaged Thursday after a tornado struck down in this Southeast Michigan community. Thirteen homes were totally destroyed. The worst hit areas, according to the Washtenaw County Sheriff, were the Carriage Hills and Huron Farms neighborhoods of Dexter. Huron Farms resident Sharon Carty said there "was disaster everywhere" Thursday night. She shared her account of the tornado in this post for Patch and provided the photos in the gallery above to illustrate the impact it had on her neighbors. A crew from the Saline Area Fire Department helped with search and rescue after a tornado struck Dexter Thursday.
(Editor's Note: The video in this story contains graphic language) Chief Craig Hoeft was part of a Saline Fire Department crew assisting in Dexter Thursday after a tornado ripped through a subdivision and tore some homes down to their frames. Hoeft returned from Dexter after midnight. He reported there were no injuries or serious injuries. But he was still amazed by the damage. "I've been doing this for 32 years and I can't say I've ever seen anything like that before. It's devastating what mother nature can do," said Hoeft. The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Department is investigating a report of indecent exposure that occurred sometime Wednesday, according to a report released today. According to the report, a deputy was called to a residence on West Huron River Drive Road near Walsh Road on Wednesday around 6:30 p.m. The sheriff's department says two vehicles were driving on the road when they stopped in front of a residence. The report says a man got out of his car, walked to the second car and talked to the people inside. The report says that when the suspect returned to his vehicle, he hiked up his shorts, exposing himself to the nearby residence. The report says other people in the cars were laughing.
