Dexter High School Misses Mark in Newsweek, U.S. News 'Best Schools' Rankings

Dexter was left off of the nation's top 1,000 high schools list, while Chelsea and Saline saw gains in the annual study.

The results of a 2012 study by U.S. News and World Report naming the best high schools across the country are in, and Dexter High School (DHS) did not make the cut. The yearly rankings are based on student proficiency scores for standardized tests, the performance of economically disadvantaged students in a school district compared to average students' performance, and college-readiness performance, which was measured using Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate test data as the benchmarks for success. Researchers analyzed 21,776 public high schools in 49 states and the District of Columbia. The report shows 83 percent of DHS students are proficient in reading, while 75 percent are proficient in math. The school was given an …

This is an excellent article. I agree that there are many good things about the Dexter high school. We have been particularly pleased with the sports programs and coaches. But at the end of the day, school is about education and that has to be the the top priority.   more ›

Dexter High School Juniors and Seniors Enter an Enchanted Forest for Prom 2012

Parent volunteers transformed Dexter High School into a enchanted forest for the junior and senior prom.

A small army of organizers and volunteers hurried through the halls of Dexter High School Saturday night, completing the final touches of an elaborate set-up, which was actually months in the making, as the 2012 junior and senior prom was set to commence. Orchestrating the rush of activity was prom coordinator Mary Ann Parr, who said volunteers began planning for the event last October. “We've been meeting every month," she said. Before all the technical facets of the prom can begin to come together, however, one of the first orders of business is to decide on a theme for the occasion. Student Council Advisor Al Snider said students attending the dance chose the theme for the décor and activities. The theme the students picked for the 2012…

Girls on the Run Donate $1,600 to Dexter Tornado Relief Fund

Thirty-four girls from Wylie Elementary School helped raise money for the Dexter Tornado Relief Fund through pledges for the Girls on the Run 5K.

Dexter Relief Fund organizers received a welcomed surprise on Thursday, when 34 third and fourth grade students from Wylie Elementary School's Girls on the Run program presented a $1,623 check to help families affected by the March 15 tornado. Founded in North Carolina in 1996, Girls on the Run is a national nonprofit that teaches girls about positive reinforcement, leadership and self-esteem. And to run at their own pace to stay healthy. "It's a great program that teaches young girls that it's ok to be yourself," Dexter coach Mara Greatorex said. "We talk about bullying, gossip, peer pressure, healthy nutrition, and how to make an impact in the community." To that end, Greatorex said Girls on the Run isn’t just about training and running …

300 Dexter Students Promote Fitness During National 'Bike to School' Day

The Village of Dexter partnered with Dexter Community Schools to provide a safe bike route for students on Wednesday.

Bicycles of all colors and sizes pedaled through the streets of Dexter on Wednesday as nearly 300 students participated in the Dexter Community Schools' "Bike to School" event. "Children who normally get a ride to school were encouraged to ride their bikes instead, as part of a way to help children develop a lifelong habit of cycling instead of driving," the National Center for Safe Routes to School said in a press release. Parent Holly Young rode to Cornerstone and Wylie elementary schools with her daughters Emma (third grade) and Elizabeth (first grade). "The girls were so excited. I feel that if they could get some type of crossing light at Dan Hoey Road (near Dexter Crossing), I would send my kids on bikes starting at third grade — …

Dexter Board of Education Approves Six-Year Term Lengths

Board members cite leadership stability as the main reason for switching from four-year terms.

Members of the Dexter Community Schools Board of Education can now be elected to a six-year term following an unanimous decision by the board at its meeting on Monday. The decision comes after Gov. Rick Snyder signed House Bills 427 and 4005 in 2011, which standardizes school board elections across the state. The law requires school districts to hold elections during the general elections in November of even-numbered years. Previously, school districts were allowed to hold elections independently of state and national elections. The change is expected to save some school districts upward of $8 million over a two-year election cycle according to the governor's office. President Larry Cobler said the new requirement has the potential to …

Local Democrats Slam House Republican Education Funding Bill

Gretchen Driskell, candidate for Michigan's 52nd House District, says the state should restore nearly $1 billion cut last year from K-12 funding.

Education reform was on the mind of Saline Mayor Gretchen Driskell on Monday. Driskell, a Democratic candidate for the 52nd House District, held a press conference at the Dexter District Library urging Gov. Snyder to restore nearly $1 billion in school aid funding to local schools. "The priorities of Lansing Republicans are out of step with our families in Michigan," Driskell, a mother of three, said. "We need the politicians in Lansing to listen to the people and recognize that a higher-quality education system is essential to our children's future and our state's economic recovery." The Legislature has set a target date of June 1 to send a budget to Gov. Snyder, and Driskell said both the House and Senate versions strip money from the …

Dexter Students Raise $15,000 for Charity; Future of 'Senior Survivor' Event Uncertain

Proceeds from the week-long fundraiser will be distributed to Faith in Action and the Dexter Tornado Relief Fund.

Dexter High School students involved in a week-long fundraiser for tornado families raised $15,000, school officials announced on Friday. The money was raised through the school's third annual "Senior Survivor" charity event. "I'm impressed with the amount of money students raised at this year's 'Senior Survivor,'" Al Snider, DHS student council adviser said. The wildly popular competition has been a tradition at the high school, and pits six teams of seniors (a boy and a girl) against one another in a "winner take all" challenge to see who can earn the most points and raise the most money through a series of games organized by DHS Student Council members. At the end of the week, the team left standing selects a charity of their choice to …
