Six Dexter High School seniors were accepted to lacrosse programs at the collegiate level for the 2012 school year.

The halls of Dexter High School were buzzing last week, as six members of the school's lacrosse program signed letters of intent to play ball at the collegiate level for the 2012-2013 school year. Seniors included Ian Wiesenberg and Andrew McDonagh, who will play for Guilford University in Greensboro, N.C.; Micheal Spuller, who will play for University of Detroit Mercy; Patrick Rogers, who will play for Hendrix University in Little Rock, Ark.; Hunter Hook, who signed with Liberty University in Lynchburg, V.A.; and Jacob Waldrup, who signed with Adrian College. Dexter Pole Vaulters Wrap Up Regular Season on a High Note

Track coaches say Dexter athletes showed marked improvement throughout the 2011-2012 season.

Editor's note: This story has been updated to accurately reflect Dexter's team highlights for the 2011-2012 school year. By Barbara Read The Dexter High School pole vaulters have a tradition of camaraderie and talent developed under the coaching team of Janell and Geoff Gerstner. The athletes have been training for this track season since October, by meeting before and after school and through participating in the Michigan Indoor Track Season (MITS) during the winter months. “All of this work has paid off,” coach Geoff Gerstner said. “We have 24 kids vaulting with us with goals ranging from ‘just to have fun’ to ‘qualifying for nationals.’ Many of the kids are ranked fairly high in the state and nationally. Every one of our girls and eight…

Dexter Girls' Offense Squeeze by Tecumseh for 3-1 Victory

The Dexter High School girls' soccer team will begin district play on Saturday.

By Alex Hardie Only leading 1-0 at halftime, the Dexter Dreadnaughts' scoring was held to a minimum by a strong Indian defense and a goal that was called back, that actually should have been allowed. The Dexter women’s soccer team traveled to Tecumseh on Thursday and found themselves facing a defense that played with four in the back and two defensive midfielders that dropped back every time the Dreads possessed the ball. With a bit of patience along with a bit of frustration, the Dreadnaughts did create some scoring chances but couldn’t score. Finally with just under 19 minutes into the game, Alex Dinser slipped a ball in between two defenders on to Olivia Vollmers' run. Vollmers cut the ball past an onrushing defender and fired a well …

Dexter Girls' Soccer Team Show's Strength With Victory Against Adrian

The Dexter Dreadnaughts defeated the Maples 8-0 on May 15.

By Alex Hardie The Dexter girls' soccer team continues to dominate the field, with a 8-0 victory over Adrian on May 15. “Adrian played the game with some good intensity and an organized defense that played well against us,” Dexter’s coach Scott Forrester said. Adrian did well to hold the high powered Dexter offense off the scoreboard until nine minutes into the game. On Senior Night, it was appropriate for senior Emily Tarnaski to score the Dread’s first goal, assisted by Alex Dinser. “It was a nice ball clipped in by Alex to Emily, who let it bounce once, then chipped it in over the Adrian keeper,” said Forrester. Seven minutes later, senior Nicole Lucas added another goal after picking up a ball and firing it into the net. With 15 …

From Tornado to Triumph: Dexter Varsity Lacrosse Team Wins SEC White Division Second Year in a Row

Six Dexter High School athletes sign with lacrosse programs at the collegiate level.

Submitted by Craig Brosch After suffering through a devastating tornado this spring, the Dexter community continues to carry on. The Dexter High School varsity lacrosse boys' team was not only on the practice field just prior to the deadly storm's arrival, but several of the players' families suffered extensive damage to their homes, and one player actually had his home completely destroyed by the storm. The team and the entire lacrosse program quickly mobilized into a highly motivated cleanup crew and immediately came to the aid of the affected families. Although the storm disrupted many things in Dexter, it did not derail the Dexter men's lacrosse team. The team posted a regular season record of 16-1 under the direction of Coach Brian …

Dexter Women's Soccer Team Raises $1,500 for American Cancer Society

Fans from Dexter and Saline participated in the soccer team's annual cancer fundraiser on May 8.

By Madeline Judge Many of us have been touched by cancer in some way, shape, or form, and the Dexter Women’s Soccer program is no exception. Friends, family members, and teammates have bravely fought cancer, and have inspired players and families to organize an annual fundraiser to benefit the American Cancer Society for the past two years. This year, the event was hosted at Dexter High School during the SEC match-up against Saline on May 8. The logo on the Dreads’ bright pink tie-dye shirts said it all: “Dexter versus Saline. Together versus Cancer.” The “Dexter versus Saline” bit was enough incentive for many soccer fans. For those who wouldn’t normally come for the game, the opportunity to be a part of “Together versus Cancer” enticed …

Dexter Girls' Soccer Team Take On Dearborn Heights Chargers

The No. 7 ranked Dreadnaughts defeated the Chargers 2-1.

By Alex Hardie Dexter played host to the Dearborn Heights Chargers last week and continued to add proof of why they are ranked No. 7 in the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 2 coaches poll. The Dreadnaughts improved their record to 12-2-2 with a solid showing against their opponent. Early in the game the Chargers showed an aggressive style of play that caught the Dreads a little by surprise. Dexter, however, was quick to take advantage of their own aggressive attacking play when it forced a Crestwood defender to take down Dreadnaught forward Nicole Lucas in the penalty box. With just under six minutes played, the ensuing penalty-kick was finished by Victoria Pepper. The Dreadnaughts continued to press the Chargers with …

Dreadnaught Track Teams Take on Chelsea Bulldogs in 'Wild Ride' Matchup

Dexter High School athletes show strong standing against Chelsea, and will participate in the River Rat Invitational today.

Submitted by Barbara Read The Dexter men’s and women’s track team seniors were recognized individually and honored for their hard work and commitment before the meet began on Thursday. From the announcer’s booth, Coach Tom Barbieri reminded both teams to be courteous and show good sportsmanship, and they did. The drama was all on the track and in the field during a fiercely competitive meet. In a roaring finish for the final event of the evening, Noah Gary beat the sophomore pole vaulting record for the second time in three weeks to the cheers of both Dexter and Chelsea fans. Noah vaulted over a 15-foot bar beating his best 2011 season height by 3 feet. "We are very happy to be working with such a dedicated group of athletes. Everyone is …

League Powerhouse Dexter Ties Ann Arbor Pioneer in Close Matchup

The Dreadnaughts earned two leads, but Pioneer tied the match up twice on Thursday.

By Alex Hardie The Dexter High School girls' varsity soccer team took two leads on Ann Arbor Pioneer’s home field, but Pioneer battled back to tie it up both times to hold onto a 2-2 draw on Thursday. A great evening on Pioneer’s artificial turf field was perfect for these teams that were both undefeated in league play going into the match. The first half saw the Dreadnaughts earn more possession, but the host team did very well to destroy most of the Dreadnaughts' early attempts. Midway through the first half of the match, the pressure the Dreadnaughts put on Pioneer paid of. A corner kick was awarded to Dexter. Senior captain Emily Tarnaski placed the ball for the kick and fired the ball in with her left foot to the far post. Though she …
