By Brent Stansfield Guest Writer This summer I am acting for the first time in 23 years and it has taught me something important about myself. Acting used to be stressful and scary: most things are stressful and scary in high school. But theater was the stressful, scary activity I chose. My school required us to engage in an athletic activity each term but allowed participation in a play instead. Most kids chose sports but I preferred theater because while both involved insecurity and fear, theater mixed these with serious themes: passion, character, soul, motivation. I remember motivation being particularly important. We thought a lot about motivation. I used to chop my lines into fragments and assign each a descriptive motivational …

The comedy follows the exploits of a 19th century doctor who finds a cure for women's hysteria in New York.
Long considered to be morally rigid and sexually repressed, modern audiences may be surprised to discover that, in some cases, the Victorians were actually more randy than history would have us believe. Such is the matter presented in the Performance Network Theatre's latest offering, Sarah Ruhl's In the Next Room, Or the Vibrator Play. The plot revolves around the idea of treating female "hysteria," a once common medical diagnosis, through unconventional means. The original production was Tony and Puliter Prize nominated in 2010, and the script has since received multiple stagings throughout the country. Set in an upscale town somewhere in late 19th century New York, the story unfolds in the home -- and medical office -- of Dr. Givings (…

The former CBS News anchorman spoke at the Michigan Theatre in Ann Arbor on Monday to promote his new book.
It's said you are not supposed to meet your heroes. But in the case of Dan Rather, I decided to chance it. After all, how often do you have the opportunity to shake hands with one of American journalism's iconic reporters? Monday night I did just that, as Rather, the former anchor and managing editor for CBS News for more than 20 years, gave a talk at the Michigan Theatre in Ann Arbor to promote his new book, "Rather Outspoken." It was no surprise that Rather spent the better half of his hour and a half presentation retelling stories about his career highlights at CBS, much of which are detailed in the book. From the battlefields of the Vietnam War to aggressively pursuing the Nixon administration during the Watergate scandal in the 1970s…
