After an exhaustive three-month search for a new athletic director, Darren Kecskes of Dearborn has been hired by Dexter Community Schools. Kecskes was selected from a pool of 187 applicants to lead the district's athletics department, which was split from the Community Education Department earlier this year after former director Brett Steele. "We're excited to have Darren on board and we're looking forward to utilizing his leadership and passion for student athletics in the district with the start of the fall sports season," Sean Burton, director of support services said. Athletic fees at the high school will increase to $250, while middle school students will pay $150 beginning in the fall.
Dexter student athletes will see an increase in the amount they are charged to participate in athletics beginning in the 2012 school year. The Dexter Community Schools Board of Education voted 5-1 to accept a recommendation to raise the rates at Dexter High School by $150 and $50 at Mill Creek Middle School. Under the proposal high school athletes will pay $250 for the first sport, $150 for a second sport, and $100 for a third sport. Middle school students will pay $150 for the first sport, $100 for a second sport, and $75 for a third sport. The board also voted to cap a family's contribution at $700. Students at Dexter High School and Mill Creek Middle School could pay a flat fee for clubs and athletics beginning in the fall.
The Dexter Community Schools Board of Education is considering a proposed pay to play policy for students participating in sports and extracurricular clubs beginning in the fall. According to the policy, beginning in the 2012-2013 school year, students at Dexter High School would pay a $350 flat fee for athletics, of which $50 would be set aside for extracurricular club fees; and students at Mill Creek Middle School would pay $150, with a $25 club fee. A proposal to revert Dexter Community Schools' Athletics and Community Services Department back into two separate entities is under consideration by the Board of Education. Sean Burton, executive director of Support Services, presented the board with a plan for moving forward with restructuring the department at the board's meeting on Monday. "I've spent a lot of time meeting with various stakeholder groups, the Athletic Booster Club of Dexter, student athletes, and coaches to gather as much information as I could about athletics and community education combined," Burton told the board.
