People who want to safely dispose of their unused or expired prescription medication will soon have a round-the-clock option in parts of western Washtenaw County. The communities of Dexter, Chelsea and Manchester will implement a free drug collection program known as the "Big Red Barrel Project" in 2013. The program is modeled from a similar one in Livingston County that uses permanent collection units installed in local police stations. "Heroin addiction typically starts with prescription medication abuse, specifically heavy pain killers. To help promote the importance of healthy eating, the Dexter District Library, in conjunction with the Chelsea-Area Wellness Foundation (CWF), has distributed copies of "In Defense of Food" by Michael Pollan to area businesses. The project is part of a region-wide effort spearheaded by the CWF and the Chelsea District Library designed to bring readers, business owners and other community members together to read and discuss one book to build a sense of community while promoting literacy. The community read also includes the towns of Stockbridge, Chelsea, Manchester and Grass Lake. The 48,000 square-foot facility is set to open in summer 2013 next to the Dexter Pharmacy on Baker Road.
A small group of residents and community leaders put their shovels to the dirt at the future home of the Dexter Wellness Center on Friday morning during a ceremonial "breaking ground" event. The 48,000 square foot facility is set to open in 2013 and will feature a pool, saunas, gymnasium, strength and aerobic equipment, classroom space and other amenities. In addition to the center, Michigan Rehabilitation Specialists will occupy 2,000 square feet in the same building. The facility is being constructed by A.R.
