Dexter Completes Wellness Plan, Applies for Grant Funding for Fitness Programs

Bicycle rentals, a youth substance prevention coalition, and healthy cooking classes are part of a comprehensive plan for funding from the Chelsea-Area Wellness Foundation.

If your New Year's resolution is to exercise and improve your fitness in 2013, you may get a little help from an unlikely source: The Dexter Community Wellness Initiative. After more than a year of planning, the coalition's comprehensive wellness plan was approved for funding by the Chelsea-Area Wellness Foundation, and will be phased in beginning this year. The plan includes 21 program interventions designed to promote healthy eating, moving more, avoiding unhealthy substances, and connecting with others in healthy ways in the Dexter community. "The Dexter Wellness Coalition’s ultimate goal is to create a culture of wellness in Dexter and help individuals, families, organizations, and businesses promote healthy lifestyle choices," the …

"Sales Office" is a curious name for the place you register to be members. It sounds like a time-share. It's also curious that no prices are posted on their website. That's really not acceptable these days. People comparison shop on the web, and they might as well just tell us. It puts me off to go to the website and only see sales pitches with no useful details. And by useful, I mean the actual …   more ›

Dexter to Replicate Successful SRSLY Substance-Free Youth Coalition

The coalition will develop programs targeted to prevent substance abuse among children and teens in Dexter.

Submitted by: Reiley Curran With a grant from the Chelsea-Area Wellness Foundation, and support from Chelsea Community Hospital, the Dexter Wellness Coalition is gearing up to launch SRSLY Dexter. SRSLY (texting jargon for seriously) is a youth substance abuse prevention coalition that started in Chelsea five years ago. Through community collaboration and youth leadership, Chelsea has seen teen drug and alcohol use drop by more than 30 percent since 2007, according to Reiley Curran, director of SRSRLY Chelsea. “It has worked in Chelsea, and it can work here,” Dexter resident Paul Cousins said. “The great part is we don’t have to start from scratch. It’s already been developed, and it is ready to go.” According to the 2010 Michigan Profile …

At Risk for Diabetes? Chelsea-Area Wellness Foundation Can Help

The CWF is partnering with the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan to offer preventive classes for area residents.

By Amy Heydlauff Sometimes you can get something for nothing. This column is about something that’s free. You’ve probably heard all the stunning information about the huge number of Americans who have diabetes. Or the even larger numbers of Americans with pre-diabetes – about 90 percent who don’t even know they are at risk. In Michigan pre-diabetics amount to over 2 million people. A month or so ago I had a call from a past associate who now works for the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan (NKFM). The connection between the large number of Americans with pre-diabetes and the NKFM is the strong link between kidney failure and diabetes. With this background, I’ll circle back to the free part. The NKFM has a program that is uniquely …

Parents and community leaders will outline goals to promote safe walking programs in the Village of Dexter.

The Dexter Wellness Coalition has joined forces with the Chelsea Area Wellness Foundation and Michigan State University's Small Town Design Initiative to launch the Safe Routes to School Program in Dexter. Dexter's Safe Routes to School Program will encourage children to embark on a healthier lifestyle by providing increased safety education, enforcement, and infrastructure improvements that will help keep children safer when walking or biking to school. The coalition will hold a kick-off meeting on Oct. 10 at 6:30 p.m. at Creekside Intermediate School to gather input from community members on the current barriers to safe walking and biking in the village. In addition to gathering input from the community, a multidisciplinary team from MSU…

Chelsea Chefs Promote Healthy Eating During Restaurant Week

Eight local restaurants will highlight healthy menu items for customers during the week of Oct. 1-6.

Chelsea residents usually think of Restaurant Week, which kicks off on Oct. 1 and runs through Oct. 6, as a temporary passport into the city’s temples of decadent, expensive cuisine.  But what if patrons can enjoy dining out without the stick of butter and poultry slathered in sauce? Enter the Chelsea-Area Wellness Foundation (CWF). The local nonprofit is teaming up with eight local restaurants to highlight the importance of eating healthy without the added pressure of counting carbs. "Throughout the week, the participating restaurants will highlight either something new or an existing health menu item for customers ot try," Matt Pegouskie, CWF program and community resource manager said. Participating restaurants include Back to the Roots…

Fitness Matters More Than Weight

Find a way to exercise a little more than you do now and keep increasing until you are engaging in regular exercise.

By Amy Heydlauff Recent research that considers fitness as well as weight shows overweight and fit is better than overweight and unfit. It’s also better than thin and unfit. Being thin or obese and unfit are about equally unhealthy. A decade or so ago a well-publicized study said mice who are fed one-third fewer calories than a control group of mice lived longer. It is true of certain insects, too. Some well-meaning people assumed the same was true for you and me. Recently research on primates (monkeys) was released and it said just the opposite for monkeys. Monkeys who were underfed fared poorly. On the heel of the ‘hungry monkey’ study comes research from a multitude of reputable institutions, including Northwestern University, UCLA and …

Area Libraries Partner Together in 'Community Read' Project

Libraries in Chelsea, Dexter, Grass Lake, Stockbridge and Manchester will distribute copies of the book 'In Defense of Food' for residents to read for free.

The Chelsea District Library and the Chelsea-Area Wellness Foundation (CWF) have partnered together to once again offer the library's annual "Chelsea Reads Together" program, a month-long community project taking place in September. Each year library staff, local teachers, business owners and community members come together to read and discuss one book to promote literacy. This year the the project is expanding into Stockbridge, Dexter, Manchester and Grass Lake as part of the "5 Healthy Towns Community Read." The library plans to highlight one of the Five Healthy Towns Project’s core elements: eat better, move more, connect with others in healthy ways, and avoid unhealthy substances, over the course of the next five years. In 2011, the …
