Dear Editor: I am pleased to endorse Chris Gordon for the position on the Dexter Community Schools Board of Education. I have known Chris Gordon and his family since we lived overseas together while serving in the Navy and I was fortunate enough to see his involvement and dedication to the Department of Defense School system. Now, as a Dexter resident, it came as no surprise to me that Chris continued his service to our community by serving on the Dexter School Board. Chris demonstrates the visionary leadership and balanced approach required to ensure every issue the school board reviews considers the overall impact of any decision on both the student population and the community. Chris’ overseas experience also allows him the vision to …

Dear Editor: I’m writing to endorse Chris Gordon for Dexter Community Schools Board of Education trustee. I’m impressed with Chris Gordon’s service to the Dexter community, past service to our nation, commitment to measurable standards of excellence, and commitment to sound fiscal policy. I’ve followed the race between Chris and Barbara Read (including Barbara’s myriad postings and comments on Dexter Patch) and I’m skeptical Barbara would stay on topic, prioritize key issues, and work in concert with the existing board members to address priorities. Chris Gordon is a proven leader and a proven collaborator – evident by how he’s worked in a supportive manner within the board of education to prioritize policies that are in keeping with the …

Dear Editor: It is my honor to endorse Chris Gordon for a position on the Dexter Community Schools Board of Education. I have known Chris Gordon and his family since they were part of the U.S. Department of Defense Dependent's Schools (DoDDS) in Europe. I was grateful as the principal for the involvement of this family and their participation, input, and direction on the continuous improvement of educational and extra-curricular programs for students and members of the community. For the outstanding dedication to the educational programs, it was my pleasure to participate in Chris receiving the Department of Defense Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal. While overseas Chris remained in touch with stateside schools and educational …

Dexter resident Barbara Read is challenging incumbent Chris Gordon for a seat on the Board of Education.
While all eyes have been on the race between President Obama and Mitt Romney, locally the outcomes of several elections could change the makeup of boards and councils in Dexter. One race to watch is the election for a part-time position on the Dexter Community Schools Board of Education. Current incumbent Chris Gordon faces Dexter resident Barbara Read in the race. Gordon was picked by the board to replace trustee Kim Covert in February. A former U.S. Navy pilot, Gordon said if elected, he will work closely with other members of the board to reduce the impact of revenue reductions in the classroom. "Ours is a dynamic, growing district that deserves to be represented with high expectations and responsible stability during the myriad …

Candidates for Dexter Village Council and the Dexter Board of Education answered questions from the public Wednesday.
Dexter Village residents were able to gain some insight for the upcoming Nov. 6 election during a candidates forum Wednesday at Creekside Intermediate School. The event was hosted by the Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce and the Dexter Education Association and was divided into three mini forums. Up first were Board of Education candidates Larry Cobler, Bonnie Everdeen, Chris Gordon and Barbara Read. Read and Gordon are each running for a part-time seat on the board, while Cobler and Everdeen are both uncontested for a full six-year term. Education was the dominate focus of the forum, with topics ranging from student publication censorship to elective class choices and charter and cyber schools. "The school board serves three purposes - to …

I strongly support Barbara Read for the School Board. I have known Barbara longer than anyone in Dexter. While admittedly biased, I can vouch that Barbara will be an excellent member of the School Board. She is smart, she listens, she works hard, she cares about the schools and the students, and she is independent. She will be an asset to the Board and the community. The issues that she has …   more ›
