Dexter residents from all walks of life are gearing up for a weekend of fun wholesome entertainment, as the community's 40th annual Dexter Daze Festival kicks off on Friday. "It's a big party," Laurie Kokmeyer said. “Every time you go there - especially at the social tents - you get to see people from all different generations. You run into old friends and neighbors who have moved away, or haven't attended the festival for a few years. We like to think of it as a reunion." This year's festival includes includes a parade, live bands, more than 100 artists and artisan booths, a chicken barbecue, a social tent, kids games, and a special vintage baseball game featuring the Union Base Ball Club of Dexter. Elaine Owsley and Nancy McLeod have been tapped to serve as parade marshals for the festival's opening ceremonies.
The annual Dexter Daze festival is going back to its roots, literally. In honor of the festival's 40th anniversary, co-founders Nancy McLeod and Elaine Owsley will serve as grand marshals in this year’s parade, set for 10 a.m. Aug. 11. "I'm just tickled that we will be leading the parade," Owsley said. "I've been practicing my wave." “I can’t believe anyone remembers us after 40 years,” McLeod aded. What started out as a sidewalk sale years ago has evolved into a full-blown festival that attracts thousands of people to downtown Dexter. This year's event features games, an assortment of live entertainment, and artisan booths showcasing local businesses.
