By Dexter High School Squall Staff Every year, the Dexter High School choir participates in a festival like many other school music groups do. The group performs for judges, receives a rating, and is able to enjoy other groups as other schools show off their vocal strengths and work to each create music. The jazz choir, Dexter’s highest level group, received an “excellent” at festival this year, which is the second highest rating a choir can be awarded, according to DHS senior Dan Hanrath. “To get a rating of ‘superior,’ you have to be perfect. Perfect pitch, perfect sight-reading, perfect everything. So getting an ‘excellent’ is still really good,” Hanrath said. Hanrath is involved with symphonic band, chamber orchestra, and jazz choir, …

By Dan Edwards Dexter High School Squall Dexter High School junior Phil Lauseng had always been intrigued by the idea of working with his hands and creating things out of his imagination. So when he heard about the robotics club, he immediately gained an interest in joining. “I hadn’t done many extracurricular activities besides band, and I like using my hands a lot,” Lauseng explained. “So the robotics club seemed like a good idea.” Club members spend their time after school working and tinkering with parts and gears to put in the robots that they build. “We meet at someone's house after school, where we brainstorm ideas and visions for our robots and then put them into motion,” freshman Parker Stebbins said. “It’s really fun." By Jacob Van Hoof Dexter Squall Staff Writer Over the past few months, the board of education policy committee has worked to draft and implement a new policy for school publications. According to Superintendent Mary Marshall, the process has been painstaking, but a decision could be made soon. “The process has been slow,” she said. “We needed to take time to have public discourse and consider all perspectives, but I think we are close to a policy we can take to the board for review and consideration.” The new policy will replace a rather unclear policy that did not provide much in terms of specifics, Marshall said. “The current policy does not have much in it at all,” she said. “The policy is absent of language regarding oversight and …

By Emily Pap Dexter Squall Staff Writer When Dexter High School senior Charlotte Knoerl Morrill learned that she was accepted to Emerson College, she was pleasantly surprised. Emerson is a small, liberal arts school with 3,500 students. The program Morrill applied to has a good reputation, holding an overall acceptance rate of no more than 47 percent. Morill was one of the 12-15 freshmen admitted to the stage management program every year. The program specifically has a very good reputation, which was one of the key reasons Morrill applied. According to Morrill…

By Theodore Grammatico Dexter Squall Staff Writer Brian Callanan, the new head coach of the lacrosse team said it’s obvious that huge strides have been made in establishing a strong lacrosse program. But getting the school to recognize and cooperate with the team was challenging at first. “We had to establish our brand,” Callanan said. According to Callanan, field arrangements have been a problem for the numerous spring teams including lacrosse, and solving the issue was something that wasn’t being taken care of. After Brett Steele, the athletic director for Dexter Schools was hired, the problem was solved quickly, Callanan said. “Brett has been very receptive and had good ideas for the usage of the fields,” Callanan said. Callanan said he…
