Tickets for the annual Kiwanis raffle can be purchased at local businesses throughout the Village of Dexter.
The wildly popular Dexter Kiwanis Club $10,000 grand prize raffle will return for the 40th annual Dexter Daze Festival, set for Aug. 10-11. As in years past, the raffle will take place at 7 p.m. Aug. 11 in downtown Dexter, and the odds of walking away with cash in hand are pretty high for those that hold a coveted ticket. "I would say your odds (of winning) are better than playing the lottery," Kiwanis member Joe Medrano said. Medrano is optimistic about this year's ticket sales, which raise the bulk of the club's money to fund student scholarships, and community service projects. Joe Scheuring, a longtime member of the Dexter Kiwanis Club, has been volunteering for community projects for as far back as he can remember, and he's not the only one. The 23-member club, which was founded in 1937, celebrated its 75th anniversary on Tuesday. "I've always been active in service activities, but the Kiwanis Club really stands out for me because it's about helping kids," he said. "To me it's a great feeling knowing that we can help kids both in Dexter and around the world." Scheuring joined the club 13 years ago. Submitted by Joe Medrano The annual Dexter Kiwanis Club Chicken Broil on July 10 will be a celebration of 75 years of community service in the community. Kiwanians from around the county as well as past governors of the Michigan District of Kiwanis will be in attendance to celebrate. The local Kiwanis Club was founded in June 1937 and has long been responsible for supplying help to make Dexter a better place to be with efforts toward the first football field for the high school, which is now a baseball diamond, as well as the addition of swings, grills and benches behind the Dexter Area Fire Department.
