Proceeds from the 2012 Holiday Hustle 5K were divided among four civic groups in the village of Dexter.
The New Year is starting off right for four Dexter nonprofit groups that received a surprise donation from Running Fit in Ann Arbor on Wednesday. The Dexter Lions Club, Athletic Booster Club of Dexter, Dexter Senior Center and Faith in Action each received roughly $1,700 from proceeds raised during the annual Holiday Hustle 5K in December. "That is, to offer the community a chance to be together as one for a healthy evening walk and run, taking in the fresh air and holiday lights. The generosity of the local fitness community made our donation of $7,000 possible." Now in its fifth year, the Holiday Hustle draws roughly 1,500 runners to the …

Editor's note: This story has been corrected to reflect that Terry Walters is not the president of the Dexter Lions Club, as previously stated. While many people will undoubtedly hit the road this Memorial Day weekend to mark the unofficial start of summer, the Dexter Lions Club is hoping that its annual White Cane fundraiser will also receive a boost with foot traffic. The White Cane Days fundraising drive is this Friday and Saturday, May 25 and 26. The event is part of a worldwide campaign to fight blindness. The campaign started in 1925 when the Lions Clubs International took up a challenge by blind advocate Helen Keller. She called for the Lions to become “knights of the blind against darkness” by caring for the visually impaired. …

As Dexter residents continue to make repairs following the March 15 tornado that damaged more than 100 homes, the Dexter Lions Club is reaching out, providing gift cards and other essentials to families in need. A day after the tornado struck the subdivisions of Carriage Hills in Dexter Township and Huron Valley Farms in the village, Lions members applied to Lions International for an emergency $10,000 grant. "We saw the destruction firsthand and it was just unbelievable," Lion Richard Dettling said. "It's an overwhelming feeling to see that Mother Nature can be in charge when she wants to be." Dettling said within 24 hours the grant request was approved, and money has been used to purchase gift cards from Meijer and Busch's to help …
