The Dexter Devils rugby team and Dexter Community Education will offer a rookie rugby class for middle school students this year. The program is a flag version of the game developed by USA Rugby and is supported by Rugby Michigan. Rookie rugby is a non-contact version of the game designed to introduce boys and girls to the sport of rugby. Registration for the program is available online. Submitted by Paul Burke Following a great start to the season with big wins against Grand Blanc and Livonia, Dexter defeated Birmingham 43-0 this week. Coach Paul Burke said in preparation for the game, Dexter scouted the opposition, who has one of the strongest programs in Michigan. “We were very keen to keep the momentum and a win against Birmingham would probably clinch us a Division 1 state playoff spot, so we prepared well," Burke said. "As it turned out, our preparations paid off more than we could ever imagine. Our plan was to move the ball fast; we moved it so fast that Alex Mortensen was over the opponent's line to score a try (touchdown) in the first minute." Submitted by Paul Burke The Dexter Rugby Club picked up where they left off last year with two impressive wins over Grand Blanc (31-3) and Livonia (40-0) to open their 2012 season in Division 1 on April 18. The former Division 2 state champions used great pace from their backs, combined with precise and well-timed passing to move the ball almost at will against their opponents. Dexter’s defensive play was equally effective as neither team was able to score a try against Dexter. "The ball was continually secured by fantastic rucking from the very strong and well-drilled Dexter forward pack," club president Paul Burke said. "The Dexter pack won their own ball with ease and overpowered the opposition to turn over the ball on many occasions." …
