The millage rate for fiscal year 2012 was set at .2 mills for environmental and engineering studies for the proposed fire station.
The Dexter Township Board of Trustees unanimously voted to levy .2 mills on the winter tax bills to begin funding its permanent fire station. During the November general election, voters approved a ballot proposal allowing the township to levy up to 1 mill every year through 2018 for the purpose of providing funds for the new station. Prior to the vote on Tuesday, Trustee Carl Lesser said the board shouldn't levy any millage in 2012 due to the fact that the township has not yet purchased property to build the new station. Trustee Michael Howard agreed, comparing the decision to a contractor who bills a client for services he hasn't completed. "I don't think we should start collecting on a project that hasn't started," he said. Clerk Harley…

Township officials will ask the Village of Dexter to help pay for one of the sirens located near Wylie and Island Lake roads.
The Dexter Township Board of Trustees voted at a special meeting on Tuesday to maintain course on allowing Frontline Plus, Inc. to install 16 new omni-directional emergency warning sirens throughout the township. The special meeting was called, in part, to discuss the possibility of eliminating the 16th siren near Wylie and Island Lake roads due to potential sound overlap with the Village of Dexter's siren. Ultimately, the board decided to keep the project as is, which is expected to cost slightly more than $370,000, and will ask the village to pay for half of the siren in question. “We actually voted to change nothing,” supervisor Pat Kelly said following the meeting. “But we’re going to ask the village to pay for part of it. It’s roughly…

The board voted 6-1 with Trustee Steve Feinman absent, to purchase 5.02 acres of land at 11485 N. Territorial Road from PJK Dexter, LLC at a cost of $262,000. In addition, the board authorized Supervisor Pat Kelly to contract for an environmental study of the property at a cost not to exceed $5,000. "This is a huge step in the right direction in terms of protecting our residents," Kelly said. The purchase of the 5-acre property follows the recommendation of the township's Public Safety Advisory Committee (PSAC), who suggested the construction of a new fire substation, which will be manned 24 hours by …

Well we have that "unneeded" one over there between us and Wylie Rd. and at least one more further down Island Lake. I heard the Village sirens just fine the day of the tornado - twice...(we're up on the hill above the village). The one across the street seems like overkill and will undoubtably be loud as h#@& when it goes off.   more ›
