Dexter Woman Starts Military Support Group for Families

Julie Boyd will provide counseling on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. at Dexter United Methodist Church.

Dexter resident Julie Boyd is no stranger to the many complex issues facing military service men and women when they return home after a lengthy deployment overseas. Boyd, a licensed professional counselor, has spent much of her career around military bases meeting clients on both active and reserve status. Recently Boyd decided to reach out to military families in western Washtenaw County and has begun holding weekly meetings at Dexter United Methodist Church through her company, Huron Counseling Services, LLC. "I just began to feel that with my training I could offer some help and relief for families in the military," she said. "There's definitely a need for a group like this in the Ann Arbor area." Dexter UMC Italian Dinner and Silent Auction Supports Habitat for Humanity

Proceeds from the Feb. 23 dinner will help Habitat renovate two houses in Washtenaw County.

Dexter United Methodist Church will host its annual Italian dinner and silent auction on Feb. 23. The fundraiser will benefit Habitat for Humanity, and takes place from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at the church, 7643 W. Huron River Drive. The silent auction is open from 3 to 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the door and are $9 for adults, $8 for seniors, and $5 for children 5-12. Children under 4 eat for free. The annual event has raised more than $85,000 for Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley since it started in the late 1990s. Through this fundraiser and other donations, Dexter church members and friends have provided affordable homeownership opportunities for more than a dozen Washtenaw County families. Dexter United Methodist Church Hosts Annual Super Bowl Breakfast

University of Michigan athletes and NFL players will discuss the importance of mentoring youth at this year's event on Feb. 2.

The maize and blue colors of the University of Michigan will adorn the halls at Dexter United Methodist Church for the church's fifth annual Super Bowl Breakfast on Feb. 2. The free event is presented by both the church and the nonprofit group, Athletes in Action. This year’s program includes a simulcast video featuring former Green Bay Packers quarterback Bart Starr and other NFL players and coaches. Former U-M football player Jerry Mader will also speak on the subject of mentoring. Participants can talk sports while enjoying a gourmet breakfast provided by local caterer Frank Schramm. Amish Chicken Dinner at Dexter United Methodist Church Set for Thursday

Catering for Christ will serve Amish chicken dinners beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Catering for Christ, a group of volunteers at Dexter United Methodist Church, will serve Amish chicken dinners open to the public beginning at 5:30 p.m. today. The cost for the dinner is $6 per person, or $24 per family of four or more. Children under 6 eat for free. The menu includes grilled marinated boneless Amish chicken from Knights Market; macaroni and cheese (for children only); oven browned potatoes; steamed or roasted vegetables; Caesar salad; assorted dinner rolls; and fresh chocolate chip cookies. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Presentation Set for Nov. 28

Not only are these individuals separated from the tightly knit bonds of friendship and brotherhood, but when they return home, life as they knew it previously had changed. And they had changed. As a first step in understanding the issues involved, The Veterans/Soldiers Group of Dexter United Methodist Church is sponsoring a special presentation with Chaplain Larry Vollink of the Veterans Administration Hospital in Ann Arbor at 7 p.m. Nov. 28. The Chick-fil-A Leadercast seminar will take place on May 4 in Dexter. Tickets are $55 in advance.

Dexter United Methodist Church will host its annual Italian dinner and silent auction to benefit Habitat for Humanity on Feb. 25. The silent auction will take place from 3-7 p.m., and a buffet dinner with a special children’s auction will take place from 4:30-7 p.m. Dinner tickets are  available at the door and cost $9 for adults, $8 for seniors, $5 for children 5-12, and free for children 4 and under. The event has raised more than $78,000 for Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley. Hundreds Attend Fourth Annual Dexter UMC Super Bowl Breakfast

The annual event was held on Feb. 4 and featured speakers from the University of Michigan and Michigan State University.

On Feb. 3 more than 370 people throughout Washtenaw County attended the fourth annual Super Bowl Breakfast hosted by Dexter United Methodist Church (DUMC) and Athletes in Action in Dexter. The event featured a meal catered by local chef Frank Schramm, as well as presentations by Michigan State University Coach Jake Boss, Jr. and University of Michigan Coach Rich Maloney. "The disciplined and focused mentality every serious athlete cultivates applies to almost every aspect of life, including work, marriage, and even one’s spiritual life," according to a press release from the DUMC Men's Group. Michigan and Michigan State University baseball coaches will headline this year's event.

College sports fans will get a rare opportunity to exchange stories with rivals from the University of Michigan and Michigan State University's baseball teams in Dexter on Feb. 4. Coaches and team members will headline the Dexter United Methodist Church’s fourth annual Super Bowl Breakfast. The free event is presented by both the church and the nonprofit group, Athletes in Action. Aptly titled "Rivals Unite," the event will feature several guest speakers including MSU baseball coach Jake Boss, Jr. and U-M baseball coach Rich Maloney.
