The Dexter High School boys' varsity cross-country team placed first in the Southeast Conference Jamboree No. 2 at Willow Metropark on Sept. 27. The Dreadnaughts won with 29 points, followed by Chelsea with 37 points. "The top guys went into the meet looking to pace a handful of their teammates through 1.5 miles so they could pull them along to new personal records and also try to win the race without having to hammer another competition," coach Takashi Gould said. "The plan went well, as our 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th guys ran either a personal record or season best." Joe Wendorf (16:33) edged out teammate Matt Greve (16:34.60) for the win. "Its nice to see Joe back in full health and he looked and sounded very confident afterwards," Gould …

By Alex Hardie In the girls' varsity soccer regional semifinal match on Tuesday, fans were treated to what could be considered an instant classic as the Dexter Dreadnaughts avenged last season’s 2-0 regional final loss. Both Dexter and Livonia started the match attacking their opponent's back line. Though the Blazers from Ladywood carried a bit more of the play, Dexter’s team created some dangerous pushes forward with some long balls. The Blazers played some good pressure defense, quashing most of Dexter's attacks. With constant pressure, however, something was bound to break. With 6:22 left in the first half, Olivia Vollemrs played a penetrating pass up the middle of the field into Nicole Lucas’ run, to take advantage of that break. The …

By Alex Hardie The Dexter High School girls' soccer team shared the wealth as seven different players scored in their second round district victory over the Phoenix from Ypsilanti on Thursday. The Dreadnaughts started their advancement to the district finals six minutes into the game, when Olivia Vollmers passed a ball in the ground to Alex Dinser to redirect it into the goal. It took the Dreadnaughts 13 minutes before they scored their second goal, when Dinser played a ball to Nicole Lucas, who controlled it and shot it into the upper corner of the goal. Less than a minute later, Dinser scored her second goal on the night to put the Dreadnaughts up 3-0. Sixteen seconds later Dexter scored again, with a goal by Vollmers. With 3:30 left in …

By Alex Hardie With draws against SEC opponents Ann Arbor Skyline and Pioneer, the Dexter High School woman's soccer team completed its undefeated league season with a 3-0 win over Chelsea on May 22 . As the game started, fans were confused when after a few touches, a Dexter player seemed to intentionally play the ball out with no defender near her. It soon became clear as it was the Bulldogs throw-in. Chelsea subbed off its senior keeper from a field position. This same player left in an earlier meeting between the two rivals at the beginning of the season with a season-ending knee injury. As part of senior night, Chelsea’s and Dexter’s teams set up an opportunity for her to be able to start her last home game. Chelsea returned the favor …

By Alex Hardie Dexter played host to the Dearborn Heights Chargers last week and continued to add proof of why they are ranked No. 7 in the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 2 coaches poll. The Dreadnaughts improved their record to 12-2-2 with a solid showing against their opponent. Early in the game the Chargers showed an aggressive style of play that caught the Dreads a little by surprise. Dexter, however, was quick to take advantage of their own aggressive attacking play when it forced a Crestwood defender to take down Dreadnaught forward Nicole Lucas in the penalty box. With just under six minutes played, the ensuing penalty-kick was finished by Victoria Pepper. The Dreadnaughts continued to press the Chargers with …

Submitted by Barbara Read The Dexter men’s and women’s track team seniors were recognized individually and honored for their hard work and commitment before the meet began on Thursday. From the announcer’s booth, Coach Tom Barbieri reminded both teams to be courteous and show good sportsmanship, and they did. The drama was all on the track and in the field during a fiercely competitive meet. In a roaring finish for the final event of the evening, Noah Gary beat the sophomore pole vaulting record for the second time in three weeks to the cheers of both Dexter and Chelsea fans. Noah vaulted over a 15-foot bar beating his best 2011 season height by 3 feet. "We are very happy to be working with such a dedicated group of athletes. Everyone is …

By Alex Hardie The Dexter High School girls' varsity soccer team took two leads on Ann Arbor Pioneer’s home field, but Pioneer battled back to tie it up both times to hold onto a 2-2 draw on Thursday. A great evening on Pioneer’s artificial turf field was perfect for these teams that were both undefeated in league play going into the match. The first half saw the Dreadnaughts earn more possession, but the host team did very well to destroy most of the Dreadnaughts' early attempts. Midway through the first half of the match, the pressure the Dreadnaughts put on Pioneer paid of. A corner kick was awarded to Dexter. Senior captain Emily Tarnaski placed the ball for the kick and fired the ball in with her left foot to the far post. Though she …
