Renowned actor Tobin Hissong will direct this classic farce at the Dexter theater beginning March 28.
In a departure from its previous shows, The Encore Musical Theatre will debut its first non-musical, Lend Me a Tenor, directed by Tobin Hissong of Detroit. Lend Me a Tenor is a comedy written by Ken Ludwig, produced on both the West End and Broadway in New York. It received nine Tony Award nominations and won for Best Actor and Best Director. A Broadway revival of the show opened in 2010. It has been translated into sixteen languages and produced in 25 countries. Tenor takes place in 1934 at The Cleveland Opera Company, just before renowned tenor Tito Mirelli is scheduled to sing the lead in the opera, Otello. Unfortunately, even before the star leaves his hotel room, everything begins to unravel. Hijinks ensue, and what follows is a chain…

Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" will run at the Encore through March 3.
For all his successes, Andrew Lloyd Webber is a composer whose work divides critics and audiences alike. One of his earlier shows, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, fairly explodes with spectacle and excitement. Recognized now for his mega-hits Cats, Evita, and Phantom of the Opera, Webber (along with lyricist Tim Rice) had his first taste of popularity as the creator of Joseph, a family-friendly piece, now featured onstage at the Encore. The musical follows the Biblical tale of Joseph (Kevin Rose), the favored son of Jacob (Mike Szymanski), who is given a coat of many colors and is immediately the envy of his hoard of conniving brothers. Kevin Rose, a New York-based actor, is highly appealing in his performance as the title …

The Andrew Lloyd Webber musical features actors from across Washtenaw County.
DEXTER — The music of Andrew Lloyd Webber is back at The Encore Musical Theatre for the theater's production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Based on the “coat of many colors” story of Joseph from the Bible’s Book of Genesis, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat was first presented as a 15-minute pop cantata in London in 1968, but was soon recorded as a full-length concept album in 1969. It was not presented onstage until 1970, however, and opened on Broadway in 1982. Like other Andrew Lloyd Webber musicals, Joseph is a sung-through show (all music). With a family-friendly storyline, universal themes, and catchy music, productions of Joseph have been performed worldwide. Recognizable tunes like “Go Go Go Joseph," “…

The holiday-inspired sequel to "Forever Plaid" is playing at the Encore Musical Theatre.
Sequels can be tricky. I was skeptical about this show since I am such a huge Forever Plaid fan, but Plaid Tidings won me over with its adorable humor, catchy songs, and killer four-part harmonies. Plaid Tidings picks up where the original show left off, with the Plaids being sent back to Earth from heaven to do something they've never done before, perform a holiday concert. With a little help from an also deceased Rosemary Clooney and Bing Crosby, the Plaids deliver their holiday masterpiece. This incarnation of the Encore's Plaids — Sebastian Gerstner (Sparky), Rusty Mewha (Smudge), Kevin Rose (Jinx), and Brian Thibault (Frankie) — had some pretty big plaid blazers to fill, since their original counterparts were so exceptional (Gerstner …

The holiday version of "Forever Plaid" features classic rockabilly music set to a Christmas theme.
The original boy band from the 1960s is back in the saddle again, serving up a heartwarming holiday concert for audiences at the Encore Musical Theatre in Dexter. Plaid Tidings, the sequel to the '90s musical Forever Plaid marks the return of Sparky, Jinx, Smudge, and Frankie, a teenage singing group who were killed on their way to what was to be their breakout first performance when a bus full of Catholic school girls crashed into their vehicle. And while Forever Plaid offered the Plaids the chance to perform the concert they never got to stage in life, the sequel brings the singing group to earth one more time—but the Plaids have to figure out why. "They don't really know why they were brought back. They discover through the show that it…

The Encore Musical Theatre will present the heartwarming and hilarious holiday show Plaid Tidings beginning Nov. 24. A special holiday edition of Forever Plaid, Plaid Tidings marks the return of Sparky, Jinx, Smudge, and Frankie, a teenage singing group who’ve been sent down to earth by Rosemary Clooney to put a little harmony into a discordant world. Plaid Tidings stars Sebastian Gerstner, Rusty Mewha, Kevin Rose, and Brian Thibault. This Plaid-tastic sequel combines all your favorite 1950s songs, and sprinkled among the Christmas offerings are audience favorites like the Plaid's riotous three minute version of “The Ed Sullivan Show” - this time featuring the Rockettes, the Chipmunks and The Vienna Boys Choir, and a Plaid Caribbean …

The 'Mamma Mia!' actor was scheduled to visit family in Dexter but flights leaving New York have been canceled.
NEW YORK — Hurricane Sandy has forced many cultural institutions in the Mid-Atlantic region to close their doors and cancel performances this week. In New York, Broadway shows that perform on Mondays have canceled their scheduled evening performances. That includes Annie, Chicago, Evita, and Mamma Mia!, according to the Los Angeles Times. Dan Cooney, who plays Bill Austin in Mamma Mia! says the storm gives the actor a reprieve to finalize plans for the Encore Musical Theatre's fifth season. Cooney opened the 126-seat professional theater in 2009 in his hometown of Dexter. "There have been no major issues for me personally with the hurricane," Cooney said during a phone interview from his apartment in New York's upper west side. Cooney said…

A talented cast coupled with a minimal set brings the 1960s show to life on stage in Dexter.
In early 2006, a celebration was held on Broadway to mark The Phantom of Opera's milestone as the longest running production on record, having chalked up more than 18 years and 7,000 performances. While Phantom is now nearing the 25 year mark, compare that with the 42-year run of the original Off-Broadway production of The Fantastiks. The show currently holds the record for the world's longest running musical, having opened in 1960 and starring Jerry Orbach (pre- "Law and Order" fame) as the lead character, El Gallo. Despite its allegorical undertones and minimalist production design, the show quickly found a large following among a mainstream audience. Such has been its popularity that it has been revived countless times around the …
