Local bakeries in Dexter, Chelsea, and Manchester gear up for Fat Tuesday on Feb. 12.

Fat Tuesday is once again upon us, and for many people the Lent season kicks off with consuming some of the highest fattening foods out there. Enter the paczki. Sugar, eggs and fat are traditionally combined to create paczki, traditional Polish doughnuts filled with fruit or cream and dusted with powdered sugar or glazed. The popular treats sell out quick at local eateries, including the Dexter Bakery, where workers will begin churning out the fried dough beginning Monday in anticipation of large crowds. "I expect that we'll be pretty busy," bakery owner Karen Dudek said. "It's something that people look forward to every year." Dexter Bakery, Busch's, Zingerman's Offer Handmade Paczki on Fat Tuesday

Dexter-area eateries offer plenty of ways to indulge in the pre-Lenten tradition.

Today is Paczki Day, also known as Fat Tuesday, the day before Christians across the world enter into 40 days of penitence during the season of Lent. Sugar, eggs and fat are traditionally combined to create paczki, traditional Polish doughnuts filled with fruit or cream and dusted with powdered sugar or glazed. The popular treats sell out quick at local eateries, including the Dexter Bakery, where workers have been busy churning out the fried dough since Sunday evening. "We expect to complete roughly 1,200 dozen between Monday and Tuesday, and that does not include wholesale and store orders," said Karen Dudek, the bakery's owner. I agree...there prices go from reasonable to arrogant real fast...the $3 paczkis goes great with their $7 pudding (took some home and did a blind taste test with the neighbors...$1 Jello pudding won 6 out 7 times).
