REVIEW: Encore's "Fiddler" a Summertime Treat for Audiences

The cast, led by University of Michigan's Stephen West, brings the classic Broadway show to life on Dexter's stage.

Originally premiering on Broadway in 1964 and constantly revived since then, the classic musical Fiddler on the Roof has rightfully earned its place as an audience favorite. Based on the writings of Sholem Aleichem, the story revolves around Tevye, a poor but good-hearted milkman who lives with his family in a small Jewish town in Czarist Russia. The issues of tradition and family values, not to mention a delightfully tuneful score, are undoubtedly among the reasons for its longevity. Dexter Youth Join Chelsea Area Players for 40th Anniversary Showcase

"CAPtivating Rhythms" will feature songs from classic musicals, including 'Guys and Dolls' and 'The Sound of Music,' on July 20-22 in Chelsea.

The Chelsea Area Players will celebrate its 40th anniversary by presenting a musical review titled "CAPtivating Rhythms" on July 20-22. The show will feature songs from the group's 96 plays and musicals during the past 40 years, focusing on musicals from the last 10 years. The show will take place at the Washington Street Education Center, 512 E. Washington St. in Chelsea. Carrie Jay Sayer of Dexter will direct the show. Sayer has been heavily involved as a director and performer at Dexter’s Encore Musical Theater Company. Her involvement with CAP began in the 1980s. The classic musical will begin a one-month run at the Encore Musical Theatre in Dexter beginning July 12.

The classic musical Fiddler on the Roof dances into Dexter on July 12 at the Encore Musical Theatre Company. Joseph Stein's Fiddler on the Roof is set in Russia in 1905. The story centers on Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his family and Jewish religious traditions while outside influences encroach upon his life. The show features some of musical theater’s most famous songs including “If I Were a Rich Man," “Tradition," “Matchmaker," “To Life," and “Sunrise, Sunset." The original Broadway production opened in 1964, and had the first musical theater run in history to surpass 3,000 performances.
