The home of village founder Judge Samuel Dexter will be decorated for holiday tours Dec. 1&2.

The Dexter Area Historical Society is ringing in the holidays Victorian style on Dec. 1 and 2 for its second annual "Christmas at the Mansion" fundraiser. Local businesses have decked out six rooms in festive decor at Gordon Hall, the home of village founder Judge Samuel Dexter, and will treat visitors to tours of the mansion from noon to 6 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. "The mansion is such a beautiful piece of architecture and an elegant piece of Dexter's history," event chairwoman Julie Knight said. North and South Reunite for Second Annual Civil War Days in Dexter

The Dexter Area Historical Society's commemoration of the U.S. Civil War will take place June 8-10.

History will come alive this weekend as Confederate and Union armies clash on the grounds of Gordon Hall in Dexter. Though no actual battle re-enactments are planned for the second annual Civil War Days, members of the Dexter Area Historical Society are promising plenty of entertainment throughout the three-day event. UPDATED: Civil War Days at Gordon Hall Gets Green Light From Webster Township

The board voted 5-0 during a special meeting on Tuesday to grant the Dexter Area Historical Society's festival permit request.

Editor's note: This story has been corrected to reflect the proper verbiage in the Webster Township easement as well as the correct amount of money raised by the Civil War Days event in 2011. Members of the Dexter Area Historical Society (DAHS) breathed a sigh of relief on Tuesday following a decision by the Webster Township Board of Trustees to grant a festival permit for its upcoming Civil War Days fundraiser on June 8-10. The 5-0 vote was held during a special meeting of the board, and reversed a previous 4-3 decision denying the permit due to concerns over a conservation easement on the Gordon Hall property. During the public comment portion of the meeting, Dexter Village Trustee Ray Tell spoke in favor of the event, reiterating the …

The 4-3 vote jeopardizes future events at the historic home and could put a financial strain on the Dexter Area Historical Society.

Plans to bring an annual U.S. Civil War weekend event back to Gordon Hall in Dexter in June are in limbo following a decision by the Webster Township Board of Trustees to deny a festival permit request by the Dexter Area Historical Society (DAHS). On Tuesday the board voted 4-3 against a motion to approve the permit for Civil War Days citing a potential impact three-day vehicle traffic could have on a parcel of agricultural land near the front field of the Gordon Hall property on Island Lake Road leased by the township. At issue is whether or not vehicles can park on the property due to a conservation easement (a legally binding agreement that prohibits certain residential or commercial development from taking place on the land) that the …

Four people want to prove that they have the "power" to make things difficult for the Gordon Hall restoration. Try putting your ego aside and do what's right for the people of this community. The Civil War Days is a wonderful learning experience for everyone. Can politics be fair, I wonder.......?   more ›
