The fundraiser was organized by two fourth grade students at Parkview Elementary.
Although Dexter is nearly 40 miles away, the damage done when a tornado ripped through the town nearly two weeks ago hit home for several people in Novi. Parkview Elementary School students Jack Franchino and Anthony Mascari both have cousins whose houses were damaged in the tornado and knew Principal Jenifer Michos' mother's house was hit, as well. After seeing the devastation, Jack and Anthony decided to do something to help. The two fourth graders organized a fundraiser at their school; if students brought in a dollar on Thursday, they could wear a hat all day. The students came together to raise $360 and counting. It seems like an odd coincidence that Jack and Anthony, who live in the same neighborhood in Novi, both have cousins in …

Dexter student Samantha Bremmer wrote messages on Post-it Notes to promote anti-bullying in the school.
Sayings such as "Have a nice day" or "Keep smiling" often go unnoticed or unappreciated in our busy lives. But Samantha Bremmer, an eighth-grade student at Mill Creek Middle School, is using the messages to bring positive energy back into the classroom. While most of her friends were enjoying a much-needed winter break from classes, Samantha - with fellow eighth-grader Ashley Sobczak helping her in the end complete the project - spent her time personally writing 820 messages on Post-it Notes to put on students' lockers. Samantha, who attached the notes to lockers throughout the school earlier this month, said the idea came after she watched numerous videos focused on anti-bullying. "I just thought of it out of the blue after watching …

Dexter Middle school students contribute thousands of hours to local organizations.
When it comes to leadership, Mill Creek Middle School teacher Val Berryman has written the book. She, along with Principal Jami Bronson cultivated a vision of a class that empowers students to give back to their community. For more than 30 years students enrolled in the school's Community Service and Learning class, have served as active leaders in their community through hands-on service projects. "Our belief is that students are not born leaders but, instead, learn over time how to be an effective leader," program adviser Val Berryman said. Bronson and Berryman said that when fostering a culture of service, it's important to start young. "The best thing schools and leaders can do is to build leadership capacity within the staff and …

They are our mothers, daughters, sisters, grandmas, husbands, uncles, friends and neighbors — and they all fought breast cancer. These brave Michigan men and women shared their stories with Patch.
We went looking for faces of survival. We found inspiration. Patch asked Michigan women and men who have fought breast cancer to share their struggles, tears and triumphs with us during October – Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer survivor Cynde Lebert, 59, of Canton, tells newly diagnosed women: “You'll be fine. You're alive and that's the most important thing.” Farmington Hills resident Dick Jaeger, 70, is one of the approximately 2,140 men diagnosed each year with breast cancer. "The answer is know your body and don't take anything for granted," Jaeger said. "Every day, I'm a cancer survivor," said Jean Bean, a 58-year-old mom, wife and interior designer from Rochester. "I don't obsess about it, but it's always there." Nancy …

Members have made more than 500 quilts for patients at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor.
When Dexter residents Elaine Owsley and Ginny Weber began quilting together in 2004, they never knew their common interest would turn into a mission of love for children inflicted with illness. The longtime friends are co-founders of the Piece-makers Quilt Group, a band of retired mothers who meet weekly at St. Andrew's United Church of Christ in Dexter to sew handmade quilts for children at the University of Michigan's C.S. Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor. "When we first started, we were just quilting for our own pleasure," Weber said. "I wanted to teach folks how to quilt as a hobby." But as word spread through the church as well as the surrounding community, more members began joining the weekly quilting group. Weber and Owsley …
