Fitness Matters More Than Weight

Find a way to exercise a little more than you do now and keep increasing until you are engaging in regular exercise.

By Amy Heydlauff Recent research that considers fitness as well as weight shows overweight and fit is better than overweight and unfit. It’s also better than thin and unfit. Being thin or obese and unfit are about equally unhealthy. A decade or so ago a well-publicized study said mice who are fed one-third fewer calories than a control group of mice lived longer. It is true of certain insects, too. Some well-meaning people assumed the same was true for you and me. Recently research on primates (monkeys) was released and it said just the opposite for monkeys. Chelsea Completes Wellness Plan, Applies for Grant Funding for Healthy Foods and Fitness Programs

The Village of Manchester and the City of Stockbridge also submitted wellness plans to receive funding from the Chelsea-Area Wellness Foundation.

By Amy Heydlauff CHELSEA — At the June 25 meeting of the Chelsea-Area Wellness Foundation (CWF), the Foundation and three of its "5 Healthy Town" coalition partners met a major milestone. After more than a year and a half of planning, the Chelsea, Manchester and Stockbridge Wellness Coalitions submitted comprehensive wellness plans to CWF for funding. All three plans were approved in their entirety. “The board is honored to commit total funding of approximately $500,000 in support of the tireless efforts of many community members in all three communities," Jeff Hardcastle, chairman of the CWF said. "They’ve given of their time and talents to help their communities begin a journey that leads to communities with a culture of wellness.” The …

Let's Not Discuss Obesity

Obesity is the side effect of many unhealthy choices, and those unhealthy choices are the cause of chronic illnesses.

By Amy Heydlauff Chelsea-Area Wellness Foundation As we hurdle through spring into summer, reports on obesity in America abound. Our best course of action, locally, may be to ignore these discussions. Here's the thing. On its own, obesity doesn't cause chronic illnesses like diabetes, heart disease and cancer. Obesity is the side effect of many unhealthy choices, and those unhealthy choices are the cause of the chronic illnesses. The only reason the nation is focused on the side effect of obesity is because it's visible. But there are unintended consequences of targeting obesity as a sign of the nation's health.
