A recent string of home invasions and larcenies in the Dexter area is prompting the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office to reach out to local residents. Sgt. Keith Flores addressed the Dexter Village Council on Monday to update the council on summer crime trends in the community. "The village has been more quiet (in terms of crime) this summer more so than some of its neighbors," Flores said. There were a few larcenies from vehicles in July and unknown suspects broke into the Dexter Party Store two weeks ago and stole more than $1,000 worth of alcohol, Flores said. The Dexter Pharmacy was robbed twice in recent months, once in May and again in July, according to police. "In both instances, the suspects wore gloves and masks. We know for sure…

"We know for a fact that some people use these sites to identify their targets knowing a homeowner is out of town." Summer is a great time to escape on vacation, but it’s also the time of year when burglaries increase – as much as 10 percent, according to the FBI. So Amica Insurance is reminding residents to take steps to protect their homes from burglars. “Burglars often look for easy targets – unoccupied homes that are easy to break into,” said Michael Gillerlane, a senior assistant vice president with Amica Insurance. “The most important thing to do, whether you’re leaving overnight or an extended vacation, is to make your home looked lived-in while you’re gone.” Remember to close and lock all windows and doors, Gillerlane said. Consider installing deadbolt locks if you don’t already have them. “Make it as hard for the burglars as you can,” …

Slow down and pay attention when driving in the Village. Many drivers are just passing through Dexter and speed through our streets. Please follow the posted speed limits and don't tailgate me when I do. Would you want me to drive by your house at 40-45 mph when the posted speed limit is 25 mph? I don't think so. Be courteous to those of us living in Dexter. Thanks!   more ›
