UPDATED: Dexter School Board Approves New Classes for International Baccalaureate Curriculum

The Board of Education approved nine new classes for the 2013-2014 school year in Dexter.

More options of upper-level classes will be available to Dexter High School students in the near future. Nine new International Baccalaureate (IB) courses were approved by the Dexter Community Schools Board of Education during its meeting Monday night. The new courses were approved with a 4-2 vote from the board, with Trustee Dick Lundy absent. Trustees Julie Schumaker and Bonnie Everdeen voted against the proposal. Among the courses approved were IB French (standard level), Accelerated French 1 and 2, IB World Religions (standard level), Physics (standard level), IB Physics (higher level), Math (higher level), and Accelerated Spanish 1 and 2. Dexter Schools Adopt Limited School of Choice Option

The district is eligible to receive $180,000 through the Michigan Legislature's "Best Practices" standard.

The Dexter Community Schools Board of Education voted 7-0 to approve a proposal to open Dexter High School as a School of Choice at its meeting on Monday. The proposal allows the district to apply for additional state funding through the Legislature's "Best Practice" initiative for the 2012-2013 academic year. Dexter already meets six of the seven best practices, however to receive the funding — $52 per student, or roughly $180,000 — the district has to meet seven of the requirements. According to Superintendent Mary Marshall, Dexter would need to either become a School of Choice or meet increased seat time for physical education or health education. "It puts us in a tough situation," she (Marshall) said before... How? You get $152,000 to let no more than 5 students in; even having none enroll will still get the district $152,000. But that is the point right? When the other option was to expand physical education time for existing Dexter Students and maybe use the $152,000 to cover that cost. Dexter School Board Approves Weighted Grades for Advanced Placement, "Rigorous" Coursework

Students taking Advanced Placement or high-level International Baccalaureate classes and earn a C or better will be given .33 honor points beginning in the fall.
