Brian Mogan, a resident of Bunker Hill Township, died in an automobile accident on Feb. 3.
A benefit dinner for the family of Brian M. Mogan will take place at Katie's Food & Spirits in Dexter on Feb. 17. Mogan, 40, an employee at Dextech died on Feb. 3 when he lost control of his vehicle and struck a tree on Feb. 3. The dinner will include an all-you-can-eat Sloppy Joe bar. The pub will donate $1 from every drink purchased between 3 and 6 p.m. to Mogan's family. There will also be raffle drawings and a 50/50 drawing. Katie's Manager Angela Kitchen said there is a suggested donation of $10 to attend the event, but no one will be turned away due to lack of funds. The local pub recently underwent a massive transformation and is bringing new talent to Dexter.
Classy, but casual. Sporty, but friendly. Great taste without great cost. These were just a few of the things Angela Kitchen and the management team at Katie's Food & Spirits hoped to accomplish more than a year ago, when the small pub on Baker Road in the Village of Dexter underwent an extensive personnel shift and business transformation. Flash forward to the present and a much different restaurant is now open for business. Gone are the dark colors on the pub's interior walls, a complicated menu that at one time boasted upward of 20 entree specials, and outdated cash registers. Michigan singer/songwriter Sarah Sherrard has been singing other people’s songs all of her life. Opportunity came knocking for the young musician in January, however, when Sherrard received an invitation to record new original material with members of Lynyrd Skynyrd in Nashville, Tenn. Sherrard, formally of Taylor, who headlines with various cover bands throughout the Metro Detroit area, released four brand new songs on iTunes this summer. Pub staff, volunteers serve spaghetti dinners to more than 100 residents and raise $2,000 for the Dexter Relief Fund.
Following a four-hour blitz of food, fun and music, the staff at Katie's Food & Spirits in Dexter is poised to donate more than $2,000 to the Dexter Relief Fund. Patrons lined out the door Monday evening hoping to grab a seat for the event, which included a spaghetti dinner, 50/50 raffle and live music. "I wish we could've done more," Angela Kitchen, general manager of Katie's said. "When you're sitting on the outside, you can't comprehend what some of these people affected by the tornado must be going through. It's a sad situation." The pub offers green beer, corned beef and cabbage to celebrate the Irish holiday.
The luck o' the Irish hung on for Katie's Food & Spirits in Dexter during the second Patch Reader's Choice Poll. Katie's is the winner of the contest, barely inching past Dexter's Pub, with a total of seven votes. The pub came in second place with six votes, and Red Brick Kitchen and Bar had two votes. Manager Teresa Downer said news of the victory was exciting. "Finally we won," she said. "It's very nice." Downer credits the friendly wait staff, as well as the bar's various breakfast, lunch and drink specials for St. Patrick's Day.
