Airplane Day 2013 Celebrates Life of Dexter Student Laurence Carolin

Friends and family are hosting a fundraiser on Feb. 2 at Foggy Bottom Coffee House to benefit the United Nations Foundation.

Friends and family of Dexter High School student Laurence Carolin are reaching out to the community in a celebration of Laurence's life and to raise awareness of extreme global poverty. The public is invited to attend Airplane Day 2013, an event that will include live music, food and games, on Feb. 2 at Foggy Bottom Coffee House. Airplane Day is so called because it is the anniversary of Laurence's arrival by airplane in the United States when he was adopted from his birth country of South Korea in 1997. “When Laurence was alive, his father and I would celebrate ‘Airplane Day’ every year by taking Laurence out for Korean food and giving him gifts. It was like a second birthday,” his mother Lisa Carolin said. Laurence, 15, died in January …

Former Dexter Student Donates Brain to Research at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital

Laurence Carolin of Scio Township died in 2010 following a lengthy battle with brain cancer.

Mill Creek Middle School student Laurence Carolin was honored in grand fashion on Wednesday during a fitting tribute at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor. The hospital unveiled an autographed electric guitar signed by the rock group U2 on permanent display on the third floor of the hospital to honor Laurence -- the first youth to donate his brain to the university's research program. Laurence, 15, died in 2010 following a lengthy battle with a rare form of brain cancer. Dexter High School Students Plan Second Annual Fundraiser for United Nations Foundation

'Airplane Day' will take place on Feb. 4 at Foggy Bottom Coffee House in Dexter.

For one night this week, students at Dexter High School are shutting off their cell phones, logging off of Facebook and enjoying the company of their classmates during the second annual "Airplane Day" fundraiser. The event draws students together at Foggy Bottom Coffee House to celebrate the life of former classmate Laurence Carolin. Airplane Day, will include live music, food and games on Saturday, along with performances by the bands Bluesmatics, Spin Cycle and Alex and Naomi Anest.
