The number of bicycle-vehicle accidents in the Dexter area is down from 2011, according to the sheriff's traffic services department.
The number of bicyclists involved in traffic collisions in the Dexter area is decreasing, according to a recent report from the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office. From January to June, the sheriff's office has policed 15 pedestrian or bicycle-vehicle crashes. Of those, there was one fatality, 13 injuries, and one damaged property. "So far this year, the number of bicycle collisions in western Washtenaw County is down significantly, which is a good thing," Detective Robert Losey said. "In comparison, in 2011 there were 42 accidents across Washtenaw County policed by our agency involving pedestrians or bicyclists." The Pinckney resident was an avid outdoor sports enthusiast and respected colleague at Scio Township's Thetford Corp.
Mary Burrows loved the outdoors. The marathon runner and bicyclist was known by many for her enthusiasm and excitement for outdoor sports. That love came to tragic end, however, when Burrows, 53, died suddenly in a accident June 26 after being struck by a vehicle while riding her bike in Dexter Township. "One thing I can say about Mary is she never lacked passion for the outdoors," said former co-worker Tim Kulpinksi, bottling facility manager for Thetford Corporation in Scio Township. "Anytime we were out in the field talking to distributors, she wanted to run. Her stamina was amazing and she would push me to run with her. A celebration of Mary Burrows' life will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home in Chelsea.
Funeral services to celebrate the life of Mary Burrows, 53, of Pinckney, will take place at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home in Chelsea. Burrows died on Tuesday after a vehicle struck her bicycle near the intersection of Dexter-Pinckney and North Territorial roads. Burrows was riding southbound and stopped to rest in a ditch on the northwest corner of the Territorial and Dexter-Pinckney intersection at about 6:04 p.m. Tuesday. After resting, she re-entered the roadway against traffic and was hit by a Chelsea man driving a 2002 Mercury Sable westbound on Territorial, according to the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office. Mary Burrows, a 53-year-old Pinckney woman was killed on Tuesday when her bicycle was hit by a vehicle near the intersection of North Territorial and Dexter-Pinckney roads in Dexter Township. According to Derrick Jackson, community engagement director, Burrows was struck by a 2002 Mercury Sable driven by a male resident from Chelsea traveling westbound on North Territorial Road around 6:05 p.m. "By all accounts, the victim was an experienced bicyclist, wore a helmet and was following all the proper safety precautions," Jackson said. Bike trails are great, but they are incredibly limited and don't take me where I want or need to go. For the same reason you don't use your car exclusively to do laps in a subdivision, I don't use my bike to do laps at Hudson Mills.
