By Barbara Read Dexter High School cross country athletes competed alongside 100 teams Friday at the Michigan State University Spartan Invitational held at the Forest Akers Golf Course in East Lansing. The Spartan Invite has a very fast course, and the Dexter girls’ team continued to show improvement over the season. The top three varsity runners, Alison McLean (19:44), Alex Ammann (19:52) and Elizabeth Greve (19:53) had season best times at the meet and finished within seconds of each other. In the Spartan Elite varsity race, 255 girls competed, including seven Dexter athletes. Twenty-one Dexter girls competed in the junior varsity elite/green race. Despite their large size and fierce appearance, it is easy to get along with cicada killers.

By Howard Russell MSU Diagnostic Services, Department of Plant Pathology I will readily admit to enjoying people’s explanations of their encounters with certain entomological phenomenon. Exceptionally large insects and exceptionally large numbers of insects often invoke rather imaginative reasoning as to the origin or cause of the phenomenon. Case in point: Cicada killers; a very large wasp that has begun to show up in yards throughout southern Michigan. In past years, people have called to report them as Japanese hornets, killer bees, some kind of mutant, or simply the biggest bee they’ve ever seen. Many are quite surprised to learn that the Cicada killer is a native species and often respond with, “I have lived here for _____ (fill in …

Follow these simple guidelines to determine how much water you’re applying and identify if your sprinkler system lacks uniformity of coverage. Also, take note that when conducting the above test you can get an idea of the uniformity of the water being distributed. If some of the cans have large amounts of water in them and others just a bit, the uniformity of the sprinkler may be poor. This is often common for hose-end sprinklers; the area near the …

By Gary L. Heilig Michigan State University Extension Many people like to purchase organic produce because they believe that it has not been sprayed with pesticides. This is not a correct assumption. The fact is most organic fruits and vegetables have been sprayed, but with different products. Without treatment, many crops such as apples, tomatoes, cabbage and cherries would be of such poor quality due to insect and disease damage that most people would refuse to eat them. Although pest occurrence and level of damage can vary in different areas of the country, just about all farmers must apply some pesticides in order to maximize yield and crop quality. The purpose of this article is not to pass judgment on how growers and gardeners decide…

Michigan and Michigan State University baseball coaches will headline this year's event.
College sports fans will get a rare opportunity to exchange stories with rivals from the University of Michigan and Michigan State University's baseball teams in Dexter on Feb. 4. Aptly titled "Rivals Unite," the event will feature several guest speakers including MSU baseball coach Jake Boss, Jr. and U-M baseball coach Rich Maloney. Event organizer and DUMC member Jerry Mader said he is looking forward to the breakfast. “We (DUMC) have a lot of Michigan State people here," said Mader, who played for U-M in the 1965 Rose Bowl.
