Sixth Grade Students at Croswell-Lexington Middle School Raise $250 for Dexter Relief Fund

Students participated in a "hat day" fundraiser to help Dexter middle school families affected by the March 15 tornado.

When it comes to helping others, however, volunteering is quickly becoming second nature. When Quinlan turned on his television on March 15, scenes of devastation in Dexter left in the wake of an F3 tornado haunted the Croswell-Lexington Middle School student. "Some of the pictures on the news showed how bad it was in Dexter; entire homes were gone," Quinlan said. That's when he sprung into action, reaching out to Principal Mark Benson to brainstrom ways students could help with relief efforts. "Quinney came to my office visibly disturbed and wanted to help raise money for Dexter…

About 80 people cleaned up tornado debris near Mill Creek Middle School on Saturday, more work to be done.

More volunteers, especially chainsaw mechanics, are needed today to help clean areas of Dexter damaged by a tornado that hit the community. The efforts are being organized by Canton resident Nancy Malone, founder/president of Hands of Light in Action, a non-profit group that provides "hands-on" assistance to people in need after natural disasters. She said Sunday volunteers are being asked to meet at 9 a.m. in the back of the Carriage Hill Subdivision, located at corner of Timberhill Court and Horseshoe Bend. It's important that volunteers report that they are volunteering with the Hands of Light in Action organization or they could be turned away by police, she said. Malone said people just need to show up and the group will put them to …

There haven't been any residents opting to stay at the shelter, but several have come through to take a breather, get some food and gather themselves before heading out to start the clean up process. UPDATED: Mill Creek Middle School Student Inspires Classmates Through Posts on Lockers

Dexter student Samantha Bremmer wrote messages on Post-it Notes to promote anti-bullying in the school.

Sayings such as "Have a nice day" or "Keep smiling" often go unnoticed or unappreciated in our busy lives. But Samantha Bremmer, an eighth-grade student at Mill Creek Middle School, is using the messages to bring positive energy back into the classroom. While most of her friends were enjoying a much-needed winter break from classes, Samantha - with fellow eighth-grader Ashley Sobczak helping her in the end complete the project - spent her time personally writing 820 messages on Post-it Notes to put on students' lockers. Samantha, who attached the notes to lockers throughout the school earlier this month, said the idea came after she watched numerous videos focused on anti-bullying. "I just thought of it out of the blue after watching …
