Food Gatherers, a Washtenaw County-based food rescue agency and food bank, urges gardeners to plant a little extra produce this year.
Food Gatherers, a Washtenaw County-based food rescue agency and food bank, urges area gardeners to participate in the nationwide Plant-A-Row campaign this year. Participants in Plant-A-Row, which is sponsored by the Garden Writers Association, grow a little extra produce to help feed neighbors in need. Plant-A-Row donations will be made to area food banks. "In 2012, gardeners donated nearly 25,000 pounds of fresh, locally-grown produce, including more than 16,000 pounds from the Horticulture Program at Huron Valley Women's Correctional Facility!" according to the Food Gatherers' website. One in seven adults and one in six children struggle with hunger in Washtenaw County, Food Gatherers reports. The nonprofit encourages Plant-A-Row …

The holiday season is a time of joy, and if one's lucky, of plenty. Sadly, hunger continues to be a problem, with one in four Michigan children living in poverty and nearly half qualifying for free or low-cost school lunches. To help, Patch.com has launched an online food drive, with all of its 30 Michigan sites participating. Patch is partnering with Gleaners Community Food Bank in this virtual food drive, and the goal is to raise $10,000 by Nov. 24 to help feed local families. Though Gleaners does not service Washtenaw County, all money raised in Washtenaw County will be sent to Ann Arbor Food Gatherers, which partners with local food banks in our communities. In our land of plenty, hunger continues to be a problem. One in four Michigan children lives in poverty, and that puts them at risk of not getting enough food. Nearly half the people Food Gatherers of Ann Arbor helps—at least 40 percent— are children younger than 18. Sadly, that need is far from being filled. Food Gathreres actively works to eradicate hunger, targeting all of Washtenaw County. Last year it provided 5.6 million pounds of food to hungry families via its 150 partner agencies. Of that amount, 18 percent of donations were protein, and 37 percent included fresh produce. "Our focus is not only on feeding families, it's also about providing fresh and healthy food," Mary Schlitt, director of development and marketing for Food …
We want to give more to Gleaners Community Food Bank this holiday season. Shop our virtual food drive by Nov. 25 to join the fight.
The season of giving isn't over yet—so why should our Patch Fights Hunger virtual food drive end so soon? As such, we've extended our drive supporting Gleaners Community Food Bank until Nov. 25. On Thanksgiving, a day when every American family gives thanks for the things in their life, most of us will enjoy a feast with our families. But there are still many people who don't have enough to eat—including one out of every four children. Gleaners distributes 100,000 meals each day to hungry people in southeast Michigan, and we want to help them with their goal by raising $10,000 through the Patch Fights Hunger online food drive. Ninety-four cents of every dollar you donate goes directly toward feeding hungry people in your own communities. …

The statistics are grim, especially for children. One out of four Michigan children lives in a household with food insecurity, meaning they do not always know where their next meal is coming from. In southeast Michigan, nearly 40 percent of more than 100,000 people receiving food assistance each week are children under age 18. Poor nutrition, particularly in the first three years of life, has profound implications on a child’s physical and mental health, development, academic achievement and economic productivity. Today Patch.com, through its 30 Michigan sites, is launching an online food drive to raise $10,000 by Nov. 24 to feed area families. This is the first virtual food drive for the Gleaners Community Food Bank, and Patch is proud …
