Salvation Army Issues Urgent Appeal for Red Kettle Campaign Donations

Donations for the Salvation Army of Washtenaw County will be accepted through Jan. 31 to help the charity reach its goal of $330,000.

The Salvation Army of Washtenaw County (TSA-WC) is turning to the community for help and support during the holidays. While it’s iconic red kettles and bell ringers will disappear from Washtenaw County storefronts on Christmas Eve, Kroger and Busch’s stores will continue to host bell ringers and kettles through Dec. 29 to help the charity reach its goal of $330,000. The TSA-WC is $40,000 behind this same point in last year’s campaign, which is jeopardizing the nonprofit’s chances of achieving its 2012 goal. Beyond red kettle donations, TSA-WC will also continue to accept campaign contributions through Jan. 31. Dexter Cub Scouts Ring Bells for Salvation Army

Dexter Boy Scout Troop 454 collected more than $100 for the Salvation Army of Washtenaw County's Red Kettle Campaign.

On Dec. 12, Webelos from Pack 454 in Dexter spent a chilly afternoon wishing Busch's shoppers a "Merry Christmas" and collecting donations for the Salvation Army of Washtenaw County. The Boy Scouts organization encourages community service among all packs and troops. "Scouting was founded on the premise of doing a good turn daily. Community service is very important in the character-building process and, as Scouts, we have made the commitment to give back to our communities," the organization said in a press release. Pack 454 was able to raise more than $100 in two and a half hours. When it was time to go, scout Seth Read asked to stay longer because he wanted to raise as much money as possible for people who need help. He had heard …

Donations Down for Salvation Army of Washtenaw County

2012 Red Kettle Campaign contributions are down more than $20,000 since the campaign launched in November.

The Salvation Army of Washtenaw County is lagging behind in its 2012 Red Kettle Campaign fundraising effort to raise $330,000. Ann Arbor area donations during the first 20 days of the annual fundraiser are down more than $20,000 compared to last year, a trend that would impair the nonprofit’s ability to provide human services, such as food and shelter, to residents in need. In 2012, the Salvation Army helped provide more than 32,200 meals, 21,900 nights of shelter and 7,500 Christmas gifts to individuals and families throughout Washtenaw County. Giving Tuesday Encourages Charitable Donations in Dexter

The national campaign benefits local charities across Southeast Michigan.

Following two days of shopping and sales, nonprofit groups across the state are hoping local residents will consider making Tuesday a day of giving. The Giving Tuesday campaign was developed by the Jewish Community Center in New York and the United Nations Foundation and aims to "create a national day of giving at the start of the annual holiday season." The idea is being promoted online via Twitter and other social media websites using the hashtag, #GivingTuesday. The Salvation Army is encouraging Washtenaw County community members to join the movement by making an online donation at www.sawashtenaw.org or registering to ring a Red Kettle bell at www.registertoring.org and then spreading the word about their favorite charity. Salvation Army Asks Washtenaw County Residents to "Do the Write Thing" and Thank a Veteran

The nonprofit charity is encouraging residents to write letters to homeless veterans in Ann Arbor.

On Veterans Day, the Salvation Army of Washtenaw County (TSA-WC) is encouraging the community to thank local veterans by "Doing the Write Thing" in sending letters of encouragement and gratitude to veterans residing at Veterans Haven of Hope House in Ann Arbor. The Veterans Haven of Hope House is a two-year transitional housing program for homeless veterans, which provides individualized services to help transition them back into mainstream society. Founded in 2005, Hope House has helped more than 70 veterans get back on their feet to date. Families Needing Holiday Assistance Can Apply to the Salvation Army This Week

The Washtenaw County Salvation Army is assisting families with food and gifts for the 2012 Christmas season.

The Salvation Army of Washtenaw County (TSA-WC) will host sign-ups for its 2012 Christmas assistance program Oct. 22-25. Washtenaw County residents in need of assistance this Christmas can apply to receive a gift card to a local grocery store to purchase fresh foods. Families with children up to age 14 can also apply for toys from The Salvation Army community center toy shops. Those requesting assistance can apply at The Salvation Army of Washtenaw County’s Ann Arbor or Ypsilanti community centers. The Ann Arbor community center is located at 100 Arbana Drive.
