Two members of the Servants of Charity congregation at St. Louis Center in Chelsea were honored by the community for serving 45 years in the priesthood on Feb. 27 at St. Joseph Church in Dexter. More than 300 people were present for a special anniversary celebration mass held in honor of Fr. Fortunato Turati, and Fr. Joseph Rinaldo, who were both ordained in Italy in December 1967. A reception immediately followed in the parish hall, and was hosted by the Cardinal O’Hara 4th Degree Assembly of the Knights of Columbus, representing the Knights of Washtenaw County. This special event also presented an opportunity for Fr. Turati’s friends to say goodbye, as he recently accepted a transfer to Mt. St. Joseph in Lake Zurich, Ill., a residential …

The St. Louis Center in Chelsea offers one-hour classes in six-week increments for residents in Chelsea, Dexter, and surrounding communities.
In an effort to improve the health and wellness options available to persons with intellectual or other developmental disabilities, the St. Louis Center in Chelsea is offering a new program open to residents in Washtenaw County. The program, titled "Fitness for Life," features one-hour bi-weekly classes focused on movement and coordination drills. "Fitness for Life provides functional fitness training to increase the physical fitness level of people with disabilities, thereby increasing their capacity to perform normal daily activities more safely and independently," Caitlin Deis, fitness specialist for St. Louis Center said. The Chelsea-Area Wellness Foundation awarded a $10,000 grant to the St. Louis Center, a residential community serving with adults and children with special needs in Michigan. The grant will be used to expand the center's Fitness for Life program. Fitness for Life will provide adults and children with intellectual and developmental disabilities living in Chelsea, Dexter, Manchester, Grass Lake and Stockbridge opportunities to be physically active. Participants will engage in activities that improves muscle strength, aerobic endurance, flexibility, motor ability and body composition. Proceeds from the Jan. 19 fundraiser will benefit the St. Louis Center in Chelsea.
A fast-paced night of fun entertainment benefiting local charities is coming to Dexter on Jan. 19. The Dexter Knights of Columbus Women's Auxiliary will host a Quartermania auction at the K of C Hall on Dexter-Chelsea Road beginning at 6 p.m. Quartermania is a cross between a live auction, raffle, Bingo and a home sale party. "We've gone to simliar events in Stockbridge and Saline and enjoyed it so much that we wanted to bring it to Dexter," event co-chairwoman Mary Ann Finke said. "It's not a lot of work to put together and it's a lot of fun." To play, participants will be required to purchase a bidding paddle for $3 or two paddles for $5.
