The free meal is open to all seniors in the Dexter community.
Service groups throughout the community will come together to provide a hot Thanksgiving meal to Dexter seniors on Nov. 23 during the 11th annual "Seniors Get Stuffed" event. This year “Seniors Get Stuffed” will be held from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at the Dexter Senior Center. Doors will open at 11 a.m. Individuals who are 55 and older or who are disabled are invited to attend this event. Busch’s will be providing the turkeys and all the trimmings. Residents Mark MacPherson and Fred Model will be cooking the turkeys on site. The Dexter Lions Club, Boy Scout Troop 477, the Dexter High School Key Club and Leo’s Club, as well as St. Andrew’s Church and the United Methodist Women, will help out at the event. The Washtenaw County Sheriff will partner with local agencies to increase police patrols for the holiday weekend.
Beginning Nov. 21, several local law enforcement agencies will step up patrols and be on the lookout for impaired drivers in Washtenaw County on and around the Thanksgiving Day Holiday weekend. The special traffic enforcement period takes place through Nov. 25. Officers from the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office, University of Michigan Department of Public Safety, Pittsfield Township Department of Public Safety, Saline City Police Department, and the Northfield Township Police Department will work more 100 hours in Washtenaw County designated for drunken driving enforcement. Many, many years ago, we got to my grandmother's house early enough one Thanksgiving for me to see her make the dressing for our Thanksgiving dinner. I watched and learned. As far as I know, she never wrote it down anywhere and I never had either, until I got ready to write this article. You see, there are quite a few things I make by eyeballing ingredients. Some things I add until the recipe looks right, some things until it tastes right and some things until it smells right. Unemployed workers can call the state's automated MARVIN system to claim benefits through Nov. 22-23.
Although the State of Michigan’s Unemployment Insurance Agency will be closed for two days next week, unemployed workers can still contact the agency’s automated MARVIN system throughout the week to claim their unemployment benefits. The UIA will be closed to observe the Thanksgiving holiday on Nov. 22, and Nov. 23. Unemployed workers claiming benefits in Michigan must contact MARVIN by telephone or online once every two weeks to certify that they are unemployed and meet the eligibility requirements for unemployment benefits.
