UPDATED: Dexter Village Postpones Vote to Join Regional Transit Authority

Council trustees say the ambiguity of a proposed millage to cover a 5-year transportation plan is a concern for the village.

The Dexter Village Council voted unanimously Monday to postpone a decision to join a countywide transit authority known as The Washtenaw Ride. The authority, which plans to expand public transportation throughout the county during the next five years, formally established its Articles of Incorporation on Oct. 3, launching a 30-day period in which local units of government could choose to opt out of participating. Prior to the vote, Trustee Joe Semifero said he was concerned about joining the authority without first knowing what the cost would be to taxpayers. In this case, I would think opting in makes more sense. It's not binding, has no cost and puts the issue directly in the control of the voters who THEN get to choose whether to participate or not. By the time of the community vote, the final tally of townships and the actual cost should be known and people could make their own informed decision. UPDATED: Dexter Township Opts Out of Washtenaw County Regional Transit Plan

Township officials cite cost and services as two main reasons the township will abstain from joining the Ann Arbor Transportation Authority.

Dexter Township is the latest municipality in western Washtenaw County to opt out of a new five-year countywide transit authority known as The Washtenaw Ride. The township board voted 6-0 with Trustee Steve Feinman absent to pass an opt-out resolution on Tuesday, citing costs and the inability to bring the plan to a vote among township residents before the 30-day deadline set by the Ann Arbor Transit Authority. "I think enhancing public transportation in the county is a good thing. It's one of those services whose value you don't really know until you need to use it," Trustee Jason Maciejewski said.
