Members of the military received special recognition at St. Andrew's United Church of Christ on Sunday.
Dexter residents honored past and present members of the Armed Forces during a special Veterans Day ceremony at St. Andrews United Church of Christ on Sunday. During the service the flags of every United States military branch were proudly brought down the church aisles as the official songs of the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard were played, during which congregation members and guest vets stood up when their flag was brought before the church’s alter by members of Dexter Girl Scout Troop 40513. A number of local businesses are saluting veterans, military service men and women, and their families this Veterans Day by offering local discounts, specials and promotions. Two important notes: Free food: Store discounts: Free admission The Huron-Clinton Metroparks will waive vehicle entry fees and boat launch fees on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, and on Thanksgiving, Nov. 22. All parks are open on Veterans Day and Thanksgiving. Interpretive centers are open on Veterans Day.

On Veterans Day, the Salvation Army of Washtenaw County (TSA-WC) is encouraging the community to thank local veterans by "Doing the Write Thing" in sending letters of encouragement and gratitude to veterans residing at Veterans Haven of Hope House in Ann Arbor. The Veterans Haven of Hope House is a two-year transitional housing program for homeless veterans, which provides individualized services to help transition them back into mainstream society. Founded in 2005, Hope House has helped more than 70 veterans get back on their feet to date. Veterans of the U.S. military, and those currently serving in the Armed Forces, will be guests again this year at a special service at St. Andrew's United Church of Christ in Dexter. The service will take place at 10 a.m. Nov. 11. All veterans and service personnel in the community, and their families, are invited to this event. Girl Scouts from Troop 40513 will lead the program as color guard for the American and Christian flags. Veterans will be recognized as they stand at the presentation of the flags of each of the military branches. The anthem of each branch will be played as veterans are honored. Military families and the public can enjoy a free concert of patriotic music on Nov. 11, 2012.
The Dexter Community Orchestra will present a special Veterans Day concert for members of the community on Nov. 11. The concert, titled "An American Salute to Veterans," will take place at 3 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center inside Dexter High School. All veterans, active duty military, and family members and friends, are invited. The concert features patriotic-themed music, including: The Star Spangled Banner, Liberty Fanfare, Chester, Liberty Bell, A New Birth of Freedom, American Salute, Armed Forces Salute, God Bless the USA, America the Beautiful, and Stars and Stripes. I have found that both Lowes and Home Depot give the 10% discount throughout the year for all Active Duty Military and Veterans. They do not advertize it, but I have had no trouble getting the discount showing my Veterans ID card.   more ›
